Selected as one of 6 final Astronauts candidates from Japan certified by NASA at Johnson Space Center in 1992.
Obtained Ph.D. in experimental particle physics.
In August 1992, I became part of NASA's Group 14 selection class. As the Shuttle and International Space Station programs expanded, NASA began opening more international opportunities. I represented Japan, training alongside 19 NASA astronauts and four international colleagues from CSA and ESA. In fact, it was so early on that we didn't yet have a Japanese flag for my flight suit, but we trained side by side, learning to work as one team despite our different backgrounds. That experience shaped not only my career but also my deep belief in the power of international partnership to push humanity forward.
@Astro_Wakata Wakata-san, what wonderful memories from 1992! It was truly an honor to go through the astronaut selection process with you as a fellow finalist. I remain very grateful for the connection we made through that unforgettable experience, and it is still one of my fondest memories.
