Never understood this - why do we use source code to train LLMs to code?

Would it not be better to use the code as context and the AST as the implementation?

Surely if I were to give it:
- the javascript spec
- the ESTree spec
- a js to EST interpreter
- the ability to:
- observe the internal state of that interpreter
- roll back that state to a previous snapshot
- use reflection to update the code (or the EST) mid run

then?

Is pointless for them (future us) to send us a message if we don't have a receiver, and don't know how to make one but, if a protocol and non-natural patterns established so we know it when we see it then they can figure out the mechanism with their "hindsight" of our future
