This filmmaker made a film that nobody could watch, but he forced two people to watch it for 10+ straight hours.
His name is Charlie Shackleton, and his target was the British Board of Film Classification. In the UK, if you want your film in theaters, the BBFC has to certify it. But they charge a steep submission fee plus an extra cost per minute of runtime. To a studio, it is pocket change; to an independent director, it is a financial paywall.
So Charlie found the loophole. By law, the censors are legally required to watch every single second of whatever you submit.
He launched a Kickstarter with a simple promise: every pound donated would add more runtime to an unbroken, static shot of white paint drying on a brick wall. No cuts, no actors, no music. Donors pitched in nearly £6,000, funding an excruciating runtime of 10 hours and 7 minutes.
Over two brutal days, two BBFC examiners sat in a dark room and watched the entire thing to ensure no offensive material sneaked into the frame. Their official verdict?
A "U" rating, declaring the ten-hour block of drying paint suitable for all ages.
Nobody on earth has ever watched the film from start to finish, not even the director himself. Instead, Paint Drying became an ingenious act of defiance against bureaucratic censorship, turning into a piece of pure protest art that weaponized boredom against the people holding the stamp.
