It seems to be a natural reaction for people to judge someone's
character based on the character of the person they support for public office.

Unless of course your morals promote/accept killing babies in the womb, mutilating children, exposing children to and normalizing obscenities in schools, etc. and your political philosophy better aligns with equality of outcome versus opportunity (communist), then I understand.
