As we honor the martyrs of Sabra and Shatila on the occasion of the 44th anniversary of the massacre which took place September 16-18, 1982, we also uplift June Jordan (1936-2002), the Black radical poet, essayist, professor, activist and unwavering supporter of the Palestinian struggle. 

Following the zionist invasion of Lebanon in June 1982, Jordan condemned the invasion and raised her voice to call for the “immediate and unconditional Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon and an immediate and complete halt of all U.S. military aid to Israel.”

In the aftermath of the Sabra and Shatila Massacre which took place September 16-18, 1982, Jordan went on to write multiple poems honoring the martyrs of the massacre and uplifting the cause of Palestinian refugees in Lebanon, including “Apologies to All the People in Lebanon” and “Moving Towards Home,” both published in her 1985 collection of poetry entitled “Living Room.”

In “Moving Towards Home,” she wrote,

“I was born a Black woman
and now
I am become a Palestinian
against the relentless laughter of evil
there is less and less living room
and where are my loved ones?
It is time to make our way home.”

In a 1992 interview, Jordan explained that her career was “completely jeopardized by my stance in 1982.” Large presses that had once published her would no longer take her work; famous poets who had been her friends turned away and there was a “a huge smear letter-writing campaign in the feminist community, saying I was trying to divide the women’s movement.” But ten years later she remained unshaken, reiterating that “I still think that the Palestinians constitute the moral litmus of our time."

In 1996, months after zionist forces massacred hundreds of Lebanese civilians seeking refuge in a U.N. compound near the village of Qana in South Lebanon, Jordan traveled to Lebanon to report on the massacre.

In an article published in The Progressive magazine upon her return she wrote, “What will it take before "terrorist" becomes the adjective attached to Israeli depredations that include massacres of civilians and the calculated destruction of water reservoirs and electrical power plants?”

June Jordan gave her pen, her voice, and her principles to the Palestinian struggle, despite the costs.

In the face of so many who tried to silence her, her and life and legacy continue to inspire generation after generation in the fight for liberation and return within our lifetime.

On September 16,1982, the Sabra and Shatila massacre began in Beirut’s Palestinian refugee camps, lasting for three days and leaving thousands of Palestinian refugees and Lebanese civilians killed.

The massacre took place during Israel’s invasion of Lebanon, shortly after the Palestine Liberation Organization evacuated Beirut. Israeli forces surrounded and controlled access to the camps while Lebanese Phalangist fighters entered and carried out the killings.

The exact death toll remains disputed, with estimates ranging from hundreds to several thousand.

More than four decades later, Sabra and Shatila remains one of the most devastating episodes in the history of Palestinian displacement and a symbol of the impunity surrounding atrocities against Palestinian refugees.

Un 14 de septiembre de 1960, el líder anti-imperialista Patrice Lumumba, era derrocado en el Congo en un golpe de estado organizado por EEUU y Bélgica, por negarse a entregar los recursos del pais.

Lumumba sería descuartizado, disuelto en ácido y tirado al mar por EEUU y Bélgica, los belgas además le arrancaron y robaron un diente de oro como trofeo de guerra, el cual que conservaron durante décadas.

El único delito de Lumumba fue conseguir la independencia de su pueblo y negarse a someterse al imperialismo, como hicieron otros líderes corruptos que aceptaron ser marionetas del neocolonialismo.

Lumumba pasó a ser el objetivo número 1 a eliminar de la CIA y de Bélgica, el imperialismo empezó el golpe de estado en el Congo, nombrando a un presidente títere, Moise Tshombe, y creando un estado inventado en la región de Katanga... justo era la región más rica en minerales de todo el pais (qué casualidad).

El director de la CIA, Allen Dulles, decía: "Nos enfrentamos en el Congo a una persona que es Fidel Castro o incluso algo peor. La expulsión de Lumumba debe ser un objetivo urgente y primordial de la CIA con una alta prioridad de toda nuestra acción encubierta".

En enero de 1961, Lumumba era finalmente capturado por mercenarios golpistas títeres de EEUU y Bélgica, siendo llevado hacia la región invadida de Katanga, donde Lumumba fue torturado y descuartizado a órdenes de la CIA, disolvieron su cuerpo en ácido y tiraron sus restos al mar.

Tras el asesinato de Lumumba, hubo disturbios hasta en el edificio de las Naciones Unidas en Nueva York, por su labor de complicidad en el crimen, dejando 18 guardias de seguridad de la ONU heridos.
