"And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the powers of death shall not prevail against it."
(Matthew 16:18)
๐ June 29: Feast of Saint Peter and Saint Paul
Jesus wasn't making a nice compliment to Peter. He was establishing His Church.
When Jesus said, "You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my Church," He gave Peter a unique role of leadership among the apostles. From the very beginning, Christians looked to Peter and, after his death, to the bishops who succeeded him in Rome. This is why Catholics believe the papacy wasn't invented centuries later. It began with Christ Himself.
Then Jesus made an incredible promise: "The powers of death shall not prevail against it."
St. Peter was the leader Jesus chose to shepherd His Church, while St. Paul became its greatest missionary, bringing the Gospel across the Roman world. Both were martyred in Rome under Emperor Nero around A.D. 64โ67. Peter was crucified upside down, and Paul, a Roman citizen, was beheaded. Their witness helped establish Rome as the center of the Church and remains a powerful testimony to the truth they preached.
Kingdoms have risen and fallen. Empires have disappeared. Persecution has come and gone. Yet for 2,000 years, the Catholic Church has remained because Christ is the one who built it. The Church is made up of sinful people, but it is guided and protected by a faithful Savior who keeps His promises.
๐ฌ If Jesus really founded one Church, shouldn't every Christian want to know which Church that is?
If this helped strengthen your faith, let it reach someone who has been searching for the truth.
