Location: Udangudi, Thoothukudi District of Tamil Nadu

Udangudi is nationally recognized for its GI-tagged traditional palm jaggery (Panankarupatti), produced directly from palm tree sap (Pathaneer).

🚨Scam
Over the past 6 years (2019–2026), several merchants blended 60% to 70% white sugar into the palm sap during manufacturing. They then passed off and declared the product as 100% pure palm jaggery,

Sugar Procurement: GST intelligence flagged suspicious activity when Udangudi merchants procured over ₹5 crore worth of white sugar in bulk within just a few weeks.

They have fined ₹38Cr as penalty.

The core of the scam relied on a massive cost-price arbitrage:

✅The Cost Difference: Genuine palm sap (Pathaneer) is labor-intensive and seasonal, making authentic Udangudi Karuppatti sell at ₹350 – ₹450 per kg. In contrast, industrial white sugar costs only ~₹40 per kg.

✅Adulteration Ratio: Officials found that traders were blending 60% to 70% white sugar into the sap.

✅Excess Profit: By reducing input costs by over 60% while selling the final product at premium GI-tagged palm jaggery prices, the merchants pocketed an estimated ₹80 crore to ₹110 crore in illegal windfall profits over the 6-year period

Why does the government allow issues to escalate to the point where they turn into huge protests? Such protests often create opportunities for anti social elements to infiltrate, which ultimately works to the detriment of the nation.

Right from Ministers to MPs, MLAs, and councillors - why don’t they regularly connect and interact with the public?

Why is even meeting a councillor so difficult? Why do citizens have to hand over petitions to a security guard at the entrance of his place?

All these representatives are in their positions only because the people have put them there.

Connecting with people does not mean addressing massive rallies with tens of thousands in attendance.

Meaningful connections are built when public representatives meet citizens in small groups, listen to their problems, understand the ground realities, and take those issues to the appropriate authorities.

These are not extraordinary expectations. They are the basic fundamentals of a healthy democracy.

Over the past many years, I have taken a personal stand in support of the NEET examination, arguing that it brought uniformity in student selection across the country and gave students from underprivileged backgrounds a real shot at pursuing their dream of medical education. In the last 5 years, the NEET UG question paper has leaked thrice. Imagine the amount of pressure that it puts on students, who had to go through the examination process yet another time when the system that was supposed to bring in uniformity was failing. Yet there was no accountability, and I believe strongly that it was that moment that brought in a shift in the minds of the students to take to the streets to cry their hearts out.

Protest is a fundamental right in a Democracy. The pertinent question, however, is this: why did the BJP-led Central Government take so long to initiate a dialogue with the protestors? Why was meaningful engagement delayed until the protest had escalated to a flashpoint? What kept you waiting?

The students and the people who are leading them also have a responsibility here. It is natural that when a protest stays on for weeks, people with vested interests will take the stage to air views that are either completely irrelevant to the initial demands of the protests or would try to completely hijack it to serve their agenda. If you remain silent and let these people with vested interests further their agenda, then you are deviating from your core objectives. Please do not let it happen!

I urge the BJP-led Central Government to engage in meaningful dialogue, uphold transparency, and take swift, appropriate action to address the concerns at hand. The strength of any nation lies in the confidence its youth place in its institutions. If our students lose faith in the fairness and credibility of our education system, we are jeopardising the future of our nation.

I think this government is clueless about how to handle public protests. I am not only talking about the current ongoing protests.

If the government had its ear to the ground, it should be able to identify public grievances early.

Even BJP supporters, along with everyone else, have been saying that Dharmendra Pradhan should go.

A competent technocrat needs to handle this ministry, and the government should explain to the student community how it will ensure that there are no paper leaks or evaluation messes like the ones that happened in CBSE in the future.

I feel this government has become completely insensitive to public sentiment.

The way the current protests have been handled shows that the government is clueless and has lost touch with reality.

Ultimately, those who suffer the most are our students- the future of our country.

I saw sound bites from students. They are in their teens and have yet to understand real life.

If a huge number of people march towards Parliament, the seat of the country's power, how can the police take any chances? They know anti social elements would inevitably infiltrate such protests.

Yet students expect the police force to be compassionate. They need to come to terms with reality.

The government should have dismissed Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan long ago and come out with a clear proposal on how it plans to conduct exams in the future without leaks and in a transparent manner.

This government has become so accustomed to absolute power that it has turned insensitive even to the genuine problems of students.

Parents and elders in students families have only chosen governments that pander to their social prejudices and biases. We get what we prioritise.

I don’t know what the solution is when the government refuses to be receptive to the public, other than to say that in the future we should choose policymakers who are receptive, engage in dialogue with citizens, and whose primary focus is on education, healthcare, employment, and quality of life - instead of widening society’s fault lines.
