@DanielJHannan Exonyms indicate that your culture has been in contact with a particular country for a very, very long time. The Chinese names for Korea, Japan, etc are unique to Chinese, while the names for most other countries like the Western and African ones etc are just transliterations
@sanson_ganbaru It's more like the Iron Cross. It can still be used hatefully, but normal uses are completely fine. Like how the Iron Cross has normal uses that are fine, but can be used wrongly. Whereas there can't really be normal uses of the swastika flag.

@lukedepulford Of course, the vast majority of Japanese atrocities were directed against the Nationalists. Mao and his followers were delighted to see their enemies massacred. Mao kept thanking Japanese politicians for allowing the Chinese Communists to win: they could never have won otherwise.

@Freedominc20631 Japan and Germany were not "colonized" after the war. The only thing the military occupation focused on was reorienting their societies away from the old fascist government to a democratic one. Mostly everything was unchanged! All the institutions and industries remained!

Here's a relevant article. Basically, Mainland China is a socially modern country and has the potential to grow like Korea, Japan, the ROC if it completely opens up. India has failed to modernize its society at every level and lacks modern labor.
