People will risk a lot before they risk looking disloyal to their group.
A practical benefit will lose to an immediate social cost.
When something threatens belonging or status, "rationality" goes out the window.
the older i get, the less i feel the need to correct ppl.
i rarely if ever do it anymore.
sometimes it’s more interesting to let ppl be wrong & watch how things play out. reality is usually a better teacher than you are.
@jappleby Is self expression a legitimate human need? Do people fulfill that need by commenting on a brand's social media post? Clearly, or you wouldn't be calling it weird. But it happens.
Most judgement on "irrational" behavior breaks down past superficial judgement.
Dan Ariely keeps getting caught doing fraud in increasingly obvious ways and nothing ever happens.
He still holds a professorship at Duke.
They just don't seem to care.
A high-impact message addresses a massive pain point, highlights its urgency, and has enough specificity to make your target think, "I need this now."
Urgency without the pain point is just a nuisance.
That's why so much “urgent” copy feels like noise. Someone added a countdown timer to a made up problem and your audience knows it.
The perfect message sent to someone without the power, control, or authority to influence the outcome is a waste.
Make sure your audience can actually do what you want them to do.
Then choose the message.
hot take: like 20% of notion is really good actually
but then they wasted it on adding a bunch of shit for the same people who took multicolored notes in school
