The Kentucky Derby, NSD, Notorious John Morrissey; 1968. Racing for America // UPK Horses in History series editor / Preorder Racing's Return from the Brink now
Amazing experience last night at the opening of Bobby Montano's tour-de-force, "Small".. Glittering array of racetracks on hand including @jjcjockey, @ljlmvel, Angel, Steve Cauthen, @dianapik & Bob Duncan, as well as @StephenCurry30 & @ayeshacurry. See it!https://t.co/NFj1dOKpDV.
Ercel Ellis was a genuine Kentucky original. In pre-Internet days, his horse-racing results show on WLXG radio in Lexington was a must-listen for bettors & Central Kentucky horse farm connections. Ercel was also huge fan of the great turf writer Joe Palmer.
May Ercel Ellis RIP.
The oldest Kentucky Derby winner for whom I have negatives is OLD ROSEBUD.
OLD ROSEBUD won the 1914 Derby in record time and, in 10 years campaigning, 40 of 80 starts. This photo, by an unknown photographer, shows OLD ROSEBUD after his final win, 1921.
He died the next year.
Throw up a hand if you remember when it wasn’t really Opening Day until this man had pumped one into the strike zone on a 38-degree afternoon in Cincinnati.
Did some of our 2025 releases roll over into your 2026 TBR list? No judgment here. 😉

Keeneland Library will host an evening with author James C. Nicholson in conversation with historian Katherine C. Mooney on Wednesday, December 10.
In Racing’s Return from the Brink, James C. Nicholson tells the story of Old Rosebud within the context of the volatile cultural and political environment of the early 1900s. Though his fame has since faded, Old Rosebud was one of the most talented racehorses of his era.

Today, I wanted to continue to highlight the University Press of Kentucky's Horses in History imprint--which, by the way, are among the many books that are part of UPK's Holiday Sale--with a look at the great works by @Avalyn_Hunter.
