It will take a minimum of 5 years to fill up our strategic oil reserves with oil from Venezuela.

On the surface level the deal with Venezuela seems like a huge American win, increasing the reserves by over 65 billion barrels.

The reality is the stuff is nearly impossible to refine, only a few refineries on earth are built for it, and for every 1 gallon of oil you attempt to refine you need to add half a gallon of water. That's extremely expensive, requires enormous logistics and is very time consuming.

This is because the stuff is basically black tar sludge, the heaviest oil on the planet.

Whereas our oil is too light and doesn't create the necessary yield.

But guess who has the ideal oil on the planet, the gulf. The oil from the gulf isn't too light or too heavy, is compatible with 90% of refineries on earth and produces the gold standard oil product with a nearly perfect yield when refined.

If you've noticed the gas you buy in your car is maybe burning a little too quickly and you aren't getting the mileage you used to per gallon that's because it's probably coming from America and not the gulf.
