I personally only travel to places like these now. Much more satisfying than another Japan, Italy, Greece, or Thailand trip.

These famous destinations are objectively great, but they’re flooded with tourists and come with this weird sense of déjà-vu. The internet has basically pre-consumed them for you. You arrive with 40 saved places, reproduce roughly the same itinerary as everyone else, then confirm that the restaurant, neighbourhood and viewpoint were indeed very good.

A road trip through Namibia, Kyrgyzstan, Oman, Mongolia or Madagascar is obviously messier. Some days are wasted, the road is closed, the hotel is terrible, maybe an entire town is genuinely boring. But at least the trip still has variance and you're forced to pay attention. You have to make decisions, change plans, talk to people, and you come back with a new model of how people live, and the memories don’t immediately merge with the previous five holidays.

Japan may be objectively better than Kazakhstan or Mongolia. But I increasingly don’t optimise travel for average quality, I optimise for the chance of being genuinely surprised and having life memories.

I think of travel as a barbell. Either go back to places you already have history with, the family home, the same Southern European town, restaurant, people you see every year, or go somewhere you can barely picture before arriving.

The worst return is in the middle: another objectively excellent, universally recommended destination you’ve already half-experienced through TikTok.

I’d rather take a real chance of a 6/10 or an 11/10 than keep buying guaranteed 9/10 holidays pushed by the algorithm.
