But it wasn't that way until very recently. And it's not always. In war, for example, we've probably been more rational about risk/reward.

You'd think, for a species that depends on it, we'd take a lot more risks launching people into space.

There's a an amount of deaths that need to happen for humanity to efficiently be working on the problem, and we're not even close to that amount.

Easier said than done though.
