No, it wasn’t just because they “didn’t want the game to feel like a product of its environment”, we’re talking about a complete tone shift across the entire company towards sanitized writing and politically correct/woke-adjacent culture and content. These articles were from way back in 2022 I believe, well after the GTA Online DLCs started to become littered with safe-edgy characters and piss poor inoffensive millennial writing.
I played a fuck ton of GTA Online and immediately clocked the similarities present in even the earliest of GTA 6 leaks, out of good faith I wanted to assume that particular style was a placeholder material but it looks to be carrying on into the full game, as seen in the trailers and gameplay reveal.
Seriously, load up GTA Online and play any of the DLCs beyond 2020, especially the acid one with Dax (their best attempt at recreating a Trevor-like character), even if your standards are low you will be completely put off by the desperate attempts at imitating Dan Houser era humor.
It’s not an assumption, you can literally see what I’m talking about just from paying attention to the marketing material that they released 💀💀
There’s even multiple articles citing verified sources that spoke on GTA 6 being drastically different with a toned down and sanitized humor that doesn’t “punch down” on “certain groups”. Anyone who isn’t seeing the writing on the wall here is just behind.
It’s perfectly okay to be hyped for a game, but being willfully ignorant does absolutely nothing for you but set yourself up for disappointment. My only assumption is that the rest of the game will be like what we saw.
People aren’t calling it woke because GTA 6 has a female protagonist, it’s being called woke because the “strong woman leads the dumb fumbling man” trope is front and center in this game and it feels unnatural, and the writing resembles the same sanitized millennial writing present in all of the GTA Online updates since 2020.
If you’ve played those DLCs you’d notice how uninspired the new characters are (e.g. Dax, KDJ & Sessanta) and just how forced and unnatural the writing is. That same style feels like it’s going to be present in GTA 6 but with enough coats of paint to hide the stink from anyone who isn’t paying attention.
The ‘humor’, if you can call it that, is no doubt going to be sanitized throughout the entire game without any edge or grime to it whatsoever. That edge and grime is what gave Rockstar its personal identity, and if they throw that away then GTA 6 may not feel like a true GTA game.
The FPS genre has been heading towards the gutter for a very long time. Every game feels the exact same, and none of them can keep a casual audience anymore due to a disproportionate focus on competitively oriented gameplay and how disastrously sweaty the core FPS playerbase has become.
