@inimitablepgw I’d agree with people saying Sir Roderick Spode, Madeleine Bassett and so on except I”m not sure you can say they’re minor characters. The efficient Baxter perhaps?
@Euan_A_C@tonymc39 I have to deal with people giving phone numbers all the time, and it’s 01, 234, 567, 891. Same with mobile numbers. You should separate out the 01 or the 07 so it’s just three groups of three. Much easier to understand.
If you believe free speech is for you but not your political opponents, you're illiberal.
If no contrary evidence could change your beliefs, you're a fundamentalist.
If you believe the state should punish those with contrary views, you're a totalitarian.
If you believe political opponents should be punished with violence or death, you're a terrorist.
@germanophile@ClarkeMicah I’m not ‘going on’ about anything. You’ve just got a bit muddled up. Tito was dead when Croatia and Bosnia seceded. Their leaders, Tudjman and Izetbegovic most definitely didn’t fight the Nazis.
@germanophile@ClarkeMicah Tito held Yugoslavia together with a quid pro quo. Serbs surrendered national power in return for rights within constituent republics. Given the WWII record of Croatia and Bosnia, Serbs did not trust their rights would be protected now they were led by ex Nazis.
@germanophile@ClarkeMicah The difference is that Croats were a tiny minority in the Vojvodina area of Serbia, whereas Serbs were the great majority in the Krajina area of Croatia. Of course, the Croats dealt with the situation by ethnically cleansing them, which was apparently OK in that case.
@Aizenberg55@afalkhatib The Romans got the word from the Greeks. The first recorded use is in Herodotus. The received idea is that it referred to the Philistines, but in context that doesn’t make much sense. It’s more likely that it’s a rough translation of ‘Israel’ (Land of Wrestlers).
@ggioiamelissa@SarahjevsEvans Very sadly our Gracie is no longer with us, but the fountain still works very well after year of use and is an attractive thing in itself.
