“Society has gotten soft in a lot of ways... The real world is tough and cruel... I'm preparing my players for life." - Danny Hurley

Every great coach I’ve know loves to share info so if someone takes the time to reach out to you about your program RESPOND!! The field of S&C / College Athletics is built on sharing info.
Rant over……..sorry
Coaches (Strength, Head, Assistant, etc),
When did it become acceptable to NOT RESPOND to emails, texts or phone calls?? I’m not saying you need to respond IMMEDIATELY but respond!! Plus if you tell someone ur going to reach out……. DO IT!!!
Whether it’s to network, job hunt or just to get info about your program respond!! And don’t just respond to people who can help you!! I was always taught to respond to EVERYONE.
Brad Stevens was asked, "What's the one thing that you look for when hiring a coach or drafting a new player?"
His answer was just two words.
Brad may now be the GM of the Boston Celtics, but his answer hasn't changed in over 15 years since coaching at Butler.
He said, "Competitive Character"
He defines Competitive Character as the approach to consistently perform well, regardless of the circumstances. It's combining character with the drive and will to do your best.
Brad said, "I believe strongly in competitive character. People that will prepare well, people that care about their team, and when the lights are on - can focus on their task and do their job well, regardless of circumstances."
• It means doing the work.
• It means choosing to be resilient.
• It means having a growth-mindset.
• It means being a person of integrity.
You can only have so many leaders on a team with competitive character, but these are the leaders that set the standard for everyone.
They lead by example. They help drive the team and are reliable during tough times.
This character is not just about striving to win, it's about doing so with honor, care for your team, and a continuous desire to improve.
SARK ON CULTURE
"It is not a sign in your building. It's not a t-shirt you wear. It's not breaking the team down & saying Culture on 3 ... Who you are some of the time is who you are all of the time."
Culture is lived out on a daily basis.

"I want to see you practice.
Anybody can put together a highlight tape.
I want to see you practice because how you practice is who you are."
@DeionSanders
Habits, not highlights, set the greats apart.
It's what you repeatedly do-not occasionally do-that makes you exceptional.
“We spend a lot of time focusing on the parents. Are they going to be fans of their son or parents? Are they going to hold them accountable? Have an expectation that when something goes wrong, that it’s not the coach’s fault. Their son has to work harder, do more, earn his role,” Dan Hurley
The role of a parent makes a difference in building a TEAM culture.

.@UHCougarMBK HC Kelvin Sampson says the off-season workouts are where the team learns to respect each other. They are working hard and each guy has to do the same grueling work as the guy next to them.
