I took the last 9 games of Uruguay and made this chart…converting our chances was our main problem. Can Uruguay find a solution to their attack? Questions to be answered during the rebuild phase. #Uruguay@Sport890@UruguayanHeroes
Saludos.
@UruguayanHeroes The rest of his staff has a lot to blame as well. a lot of players played very little futbol to start 2026, but they were given the starting position in the lineup. Ugarte is one, in the final 19 games of the season he started in only 4 games for Man U. “Falta de futbol”
@UruguayanHeroes I think we all drank the Kool-Aid with him becoming Manager. High expectations, high hopes, but at the same time how didn’t the organization look at his track record at the World Cup? Possibly the worst investment Uruguay has ever done.
No es culpa de Viñas, de Muslera o de Sanabria.
Hay un gran deterioro en el las divisiones formativas de Uruguay.
No puede ser que en 16 años no saques un arquero mejor que Muslera. Nacho Alonso destruyó todo.
Uruguay's Fernando Muslera has the most errors leading to goals in a single World Cup since 1966 (3 in 2026).
No other player had more than 2 until today.
I don't think Fede Valverde should wear the captain's armband anymore after the World Cup he just had.
Give it to Bentancur or Olivera, they are way more deserving.
Just shows you we did not deserve to be at this World Cup. Bielsa era is done. Now to search for a new coach. Does Nacho Alonso resign as well???? @Uruguay
@Magnusbrod_ Unfortunately Bielsa sticks with his favorite substitutes…we had the same problems during qualifiers…biggest game of this generation of players on Friday. Every player needs to play 8 out of 10 rating.
Uruguay desperately lack creativity between the lines in the final third. They simply don't have enough players capable of creating advantages in tight spaces.
Most of their key players thrive when attacking space rather than operating within it. As a result, their attacks become far too predictable, with a heavy reliance on wide areas and direct running
Ugarte and Bentancur doesn't compensate each other well, as they both are very static and lacks creativity in final third. Both are terriors who have qualities in covering ground and standing out in ground duels. But they lack to find the decisive key passes..
Valverde is also more of a player who likes to get the ball deep himself, and not a player who excelerates in being the main key to create.
Maxi Araujo is a deep runner with qualities in high intesitiy runs deep from the wide left hand side..
I hope to see Rodrigo Zalazar on, and Marcelo Bielsa to see that his team struggle way to much in creating in between lines on the final third. Way too much ball cirlating on the wide areas and deep runners on the pitch, they need a player capable of playing in the tiny spaces on the final third...
Also sad to see Giorgian de Arrascaeta out with injury, as he could have been crucial to adding this..
BIG PROBLEMS FOR URUGUAY in creating...!
Uruguay 2 - 2 Cape Verde.
Uruguay attacking today in their usual 4-3-3, which becomes a 2-1-7 structure by pushing the full-backs and attacking midfielders high and adding many players into the last line.
Bielsa’s first priority is to create wide rotations through constant mobility, pass-and-move actions, and third-man runs. However, Cape Verde defended these movements well, mainly because their players are extremely athletic and physical, meaning this option was often denied.
The second option is to put crosses into the box. This can be effective because Uruguay have so many players in the last line and can create overloads inside the box. The problem with crosses is that the game can become much more chaotic after second balls, and Uruguay commit many players forward, meaning they can be exposed in transition if they rely too much on this option.
That’s why Bielsa prefers the wide rotations: they allow Uruguay to counter-press better and dominate games by playing at a high rhythm, both with and without the ball.
Against Saudi Arabia, they were not exposed as much because Saudi Arabia lack the pace to be dangerous in offensive transitions. Cape Verde, however, have the athleticism to hurt them in those moments. Either way, crosses have been Uruguay’s biggest attacking weapon in this World Cup.
What is clear is that Uruguay lack a specialist attacking midfielder who can operate between the lines and help them attack centrally. De Arrascaeta could be that player, but he is injured. Fede Valverde is much better arriving from deeper positions, while Bentancur, in my opinion, should play deeper. As a result, Uruguay don’t really have a player who can consistently receive centrally, manipulate the ball in tight spaces, or provide the final through pass.
Defensively, today we saw a more typical Bielsa team, pressing man-to-man and only leaving a +1 in the back line. It is a slightly more conservative man-to-man press compared to Gasperini’s Roma. Cape Verde had the quality and athleticism to win some of those individual duels, especially in the first half. After that, I think Uruguay defended more zonally against Saudi Arabia because of their more relational style, with players like Abu Al-Shamat moving from one side of the pitch to the other. This can drag Uruguay’s players too far when following their man, so Bielsa preferred a more zonal approach.
This end of the game against Cape Verde was crazy, but that’s what happens when you play like Uruguay, at such a high rhythm, commiting many players forward, and fatigue starts to create spaces. You end up with a chaotic game where anyone can win.
@UruguayanHeroes Then Suarez being pushed out the back door by Bielsa which then caused him to come out and speak out against the coach publicly. It was a very bad look on the team and the AUF. After that, Bielsa lost the lockerroom. The morale and the Garra has been nonexistent for years.
@UruguayanHeroes “Toda la carne al asador” for Friday… if we do not make it to the round of 32, It will be very easy to pick out the downfall of this team and it all starts with the Colombia game in the Copa América. It has been a downward spiral ever since.
