Despite overwhelming opposition, the McKinney City Council voted 7-0 to approve the site plan for a new 5.5-acre McKinney Islamic Association facility featuring a large sanctuary, classrooms, and gym.

More than 100 residents spoke during a tense, five-hour meeting that stretched late into the night.
Many voiced practical concerns about traffic and neighborhood impacts, but a significant number focused on deeper fears about Sharia law. Speakers warned that expanding Islamic institutions could open the door to parallel legal systems, cultural separation, and the gradual imposition of Sharia principles that conflict with American and Texas law. One Iranian-American resident, describing himself as a “Sharia law survivor,” urged the council not to repeat the mistakes of countries that once allowed such changes and later regretted them.

The crowd repeatedly booed council members as they defended the decision. Officials insisted the vote was purely procedural — the plans complied with existing zoning, so they had no legal basis to reject it.
