We often think of intelligence as something internal residing in human brains. But objects and man made tools could be thought as externalized or embodied intelligence.
From Deep Learning with Python:
- Deep learning research is an evolution process driven by poorly-understood empirical results
- Math in DL papers is usually worthless and was placed there purely as a signal of seriousness
- The key to good research is understanding what *causes* your results, and that requires ablation studies (which few researchers attempt to do)
We set up a Discord server to share ideas and brainstorm about the intersections between #synbio, #AI, evolution, evolutionary algorithms and alife. It is a place to think about how we can make biology open-ended. DM me if you want to join. We welcome diverse viewpoints! (RT=💕)
Looking forward to presenting our @ieee_tvcg paper on "Accelerating Hyperbolic t-SNE" at @ieeevis this year. If you're attending the conference, let's meet!
🗞️Fresh out of the press! A blog post on using torch.multiprocessing for dataloading of large 3D medical scans.
🔁We repurposed functions used within torch's Dataloader() class.

This is about 5% of Roche's famous metabolic pathways chart.
Here's the full version: https://t.co/htz1x6a0qk
I seriously doubt any single person on the planet can "grok" this entire chart. (Memorize? Sure. But keep all the pieces in mind all at once, or even a substantive percentage of them - no way. Not enough RAM). And this chart isn't even comprehensive regarding what is known about metabolic pathways, to say nothing of what has yet to be discovered. And metabolic pathways are just one of many different kinds of biological pathways. Some of them are far more complex and much less well understood than metabolic pathways.
If reaching bold transhumanist goals in biotech (e.g. radical life extension) can't be accomplished through simplistic shortcuts we happen to luck upon, and requires deep integrated understanding of biological systems as a whole, then there's a good chance it's just never getting done by baseline humans, period. The threshold would be beyond even the extreme right tail of the bell curve, and would require AGI+ or mentally enhanced humans.
Cells are fast and crowded places. Numbers help us make sense of them.
Here are five of my favorite "bionumbers."
1. ATP synthase spins 134 times/second. That is much faster than the propeller on most piston airplanes, and about half the r.p.m. of a Boeing 737 jet engine.
@peterthiel states that arguing over process has become a way to endlessly defer making concrete plans for a better future. In #academia this appears as a lack of a concrete vision with researchers gathering incremental knowledge that will likely not affect the bottom line.
I’m in awe with nature’s way but is important to realize that evolution is not necessarily intelligent. For instance, Darwin lists things that evolved in a flawed manner like the poor drainage of sinuses in primates and the inability to synthesize vitamin C. #biology
