🌘 Eclipses in pairs: why and when

Twice a year, an "eclipse season" lasting about 34 days occurs. During this time, a new moon and a full moon—separated by approximately 14 days—bring about a solar eclipse and a lunar eclipse.

In 2026, this resulted in a total solar eclipse on August 12 and a deep partial lunar eclipse on August 27/28 (with up to 93% of the disk in shadow). The following season will feature an annular solar eclipse on February 6, 2027, and a penumbral lunar eclipse on February 20/21.
