Urgent: I almost got Scammed today

In this post, I’m going to describe a scam targeting content creators by posing as advertising partners.

It’s a close call that could have ended much worse, so please take this seriously.

Last week, I received an inquiry from a marketing agency interested in a collaboration.
​
I regularly get such inquiries and up until then nothing was out of the ordinary.
​
We chatted over Telegram, discussing potential options, and then scheduled a meeting through Calendly and I was informed that the meeting takes place on Slack.
​
As Slack is a well-known company, I had no objections and downloaded the program.
​
Today was the day of the meeting and at the agreed time I received a link to join the meeting.

But—huh? The link wasn’t working.

At this point, I started to get a little suspicious.
​
Well, I let them know that I was getting an error and couldn't join the channel.
​
Then two of the scammers wrote in the group chat, one of them said that he also had this error last week and solved it with a driver update.
​
He sent me a Reddit post with which you can solve the error.

Since I've already read a few posts like the one I'm writing right now, I thankfully smelled the scam.
​
I then tried to have the meeting via another platform, e.g. Google Meets.
​
The scammers declined.
​
They said they had all the branding kids and other documents on Slack and could only do the meetings there.
​
They then offered me technical support via a colleague.
​
As I was already aware at this point that nothing was going right here, I declined.
​
After a brief conversation, the group chat was deleted and the scammer blocked me on Telegram.
​
