Dainik Bhaskar journalist went undercover as a laborer in a flour mill in UP and exposed a rotten system that's playing with people's health.

Operators in mills across Agra, Firozabad are mixing stone powder from Rajasthan into atta, increasing their earnings by 70–80 paise per kg i.e. 7k-8k extra per day. These adulterated flour, sold under brands like Maharaja Bhog Atta, is even reaching school mid-day meals. These calcium carbonate can clog intestines and damage the liver and kidneys.

Being in the D2C industry, I'm aware of many brands who do these kinds of things just to save margins and make more money. We keep calling them out, but this looks much bigger.

Government and FSSAI need to act and take control. Consumer health should never be compromised for profit.

A former Japanese official who was personally involved in the Mumbai Ahmedabad Shinkansen project has expressed deep anguish over its setbacks.

He criticises the Indian side’s repeated recklessness, breaking promises, flipping positions at the last minute, and prioritising self interest till the end.

He notes that even the minister in charge was particularly difficult, making decent negotiations nearly impossible.

Despite Japanese teams pouring their hearts into the project, he is 100% convinced that the lack of progress is entirely on the Indian side.

Prime Minister Takaichi’s recent visit also yielded no breakthrough. Japan has now been excluded from the signal system, the critical safety backbone, according to Toyo Keizai Online.

This is profoundly disappointing for a flagship India Japan collaboration. Reliable execution and keeping commitments are essential if we want such high impact infrastructure projects to succeed.

I recently spent 2 weeks in China.

6 cities: Shanghai, Beijing, Xi’an, Zhangjiajie, Chongqing and Chengdu.

I went there with curiosity.

Like many Indians, I had heard a lot about China through media, social media and conversations. I expected to see progress, maybe discover some business ideas, and understand what the country is actually building.

I came back with a very uncomfortable feeling.

Not because I found a business idea for myself.

But because I saw 100 things that governments can do when infrastructure, tourism, transport, urban planning and civic systems are treated seriously.

I travelled within China by flights, trains, cars and local transport. The infrastructure was honestly stunning.

Clean cities. Smooth roads. High-speed trains. Well-managed traffic. Public spaces that actually feel designed for people. Tourist destinations that are built, maintained and promoted like national assets.

And then I kept thinking about India.

We keep comparing ourselves to China. Our media keeps telling us how India is catching up, how China is restrictive, how we are better in so many ways.

After spending time there and speaking to people, I realised how much of that narrative is just comfort food.

China is not perfect. No country is.

But on infrastructure, execution, tourism, civic discipline and quality of urban life, they are not 5 years ahead of us.

They are decades ahead.

The saddest part for me was the currency.

Everything felt expensive. Not because China was insanely expensive, but because the rupee has weakened so much that even normal spending starts feeling heavy. As an Indian taxpayer, that genuinely hurt.

We pay taxes. We work hard. We talk about becoming a global power.

But where is the quality of life?

Where is the civic sense?

Where is the infrastructure that makes daily life easier?

Where is the tourism vision beyond religious tourism?

I met travellers from other countries who were excited to visit China because they wanted to see its progress. When I asked about India, many had no real desire to visit. Not out of hate. India simply was not on their aspirational travel list.

That should bother us.

Even the so-called “closed internet” surprised me. We are told people there are missing out because they don’t use Google, Instagram, WhatsApp or Facebook.

But China has built its own digital ecosystem. Payments, maps, transport, messaging, shopping, everything works inside their own infrastructure. People did not seem to feel deprived. They seemed adapted.

Again, this is not a hate post.

I love India. That is exactly why this trip bothered me.

Patriotism cannot only be about saying we are great.

Real patriotism is having the courage to admit where we are falling behind.

China made me realise one thing very clearly:

India’s potential is not the problem.

Execution is.

And unless we stop comforting ourselves with comparisons and start demanding better infrastructure, better governance, better tourism, cleaner cities and a higher quality of life, we will keep celebrating the idea of progress instead of actually living it.

A junior IAS officer was allotted the most interior plots in the deal. When land prices skyrocketed, plots along the road increased 15 times in value. However, the officer’s interior plots saw almost no appreciation.

A Gmail ID was used to impersonate a Central PSU. Nobody questioned it. And ₹20,000 crore in govt tenders got rigged.

Let me tell you the story of India's most absurd corruption case.

Jal Jeevan Mission, PM Modi's flagship scheme to give tap water to every rural home. Rajasthan alone got ₹10,180 crore from the Centre in FY22 and ₹13,328 crore in FY23. Almost 23% of the entire national JJM budget went to one state.

Two tubewell companies wanted these tenders. Problem? They had zero experience. Solution? They forged experience certificates of IRCON, a Railways PSU. Fake letterheads, fictitious officer names. And for verification, they created a Gmail ID pretending to be IRCON officials.

A Central govt PSU under Ministry of Railways. Replying from @ gmail. com. Not .gov.in. Not .nic.in. Gmail. And nobody in the entire PHED department found this suspicious. Not one officer. Combined, these two firms filed 230+ tenders using these forged documents.

But the real Bollywood moment? PHED sent an engineer to Kerala to "physically verify" IRCON's work. The contractors and a forger reached Kochi ONE DAY before him. Checked into Hotel Woodlark. The forger was introduced to the engineer as "Vijay Shankar, CEO, IRCON International." Random photos of pumphouses were submitted as proof. The contractor left his personal phone in Jaipur and used an employee's SIM card to avoid GPS tracking. The engineer came back and submitted a "positive verification report."

Now here's the part that makes your blood boil.

In June 2023, IRCON's own Vigilance Department wrote DIRECTLY to the Addl Chief Secretary Subodh Agarwal — "These certificates are fake and fabricated." What happened? The warning emails were deleted. Compliant engineers were handpicked to give false positive reports. Three separate legal notices were sent to the department. All ignored.

But the scam wasn't just about fake certificates. That was just ₹960 crore. The bigger game was ₹20,000 crore.

Agarwal introduced a rule — "Site Visit Certificates" mandatory for tenders above ₹50 crore. Sounds like transparency, right? It actually exposed which companies were bidding BEFORE tender opening. Once everyone knows who else is bidding, you form cartels. You fix prices. Tender premiums were inflated 30-40% across the board.

The numbers:

₹20,000 crore in tenders rigged 30-40% inflated premiums, 4% bribery formula ₹47 crore seized by ED so far — 0.2% of the scam

The fraud ran from 2021 to 2023 under the Congress govt in Rajasthan. IRCON warned in 2023. CBI filed an FIR in 2024. ED arrested the minister in 2025. Agarwal was finally caught this week — after being on the run for 2 months, evading 40+ ACB teams across 100 locations in 21 cities.

JJM 2.0 just got approved. Budget: ₹8.69 lakh crore. The real question — has the system that enabled this actually changed? Or are we just funding the next scam on a bigger scale

The city of Andernach, Germany planted 101 varieties of tomatoes in the town center and told everyone to take whatever they wanted.

It was such a hit they did beans the next year, then added onions, fruit trees, lettuce, zucchini, berries, and herbs. All free to the public and maintained by the city.

Andernach is now known as the "edible city."

Philadelphia has been doing a version of this since 2007. The Philadelphia Orchard Project has helped establish 67 sites across the city with thousands of food-bearing trees.

Baltimore is planting fruit trees on sidewalks. Seattle, Boston, San Francisco, and Asheville all have public urban orchards.

A mature apple tree produces 400-500 pounds of fruit per year. A mature pear tree can produce for 75 years.

We've decided our cities should have trees. We just haven't decided those trees should feed people.

Good air, clean water, and food are fundamental to a good life. In that sense, they should be treated as fundamental rights.

But air quality has been steadily degrading, and it's not really part of the mainstream conversation. That needs to change. Right now, if you look at the site (link in comments), everything looks green. But as we get closer to the end of the year, things will start looking much worse.

Solving air pollution is hard, but the first step is simple: people need to know what they're breathing.

Right now, that's not possible. India does collect air quality data, but it's either locked away, too broad to tell you anything about your locality, or just not published at all. There's no single place a citizen can go to get a clear, neighbourhood-level picture.

So we set out to fix that.
