SAVE THE DATE: Researcher Peter Liljedahl will join us on Thursday, May 4th at 11:30 am ET for our second webinar in the IM Experience Webinar Series, "Building Thinking in an IM Classroom." You won’t want to miss this experience! #IMxWebinar#LearnWithIM
Last week, my friend Sarah (@MrsBonner301) “involuntarily resigned” from her classroom teaching position.
I am so disappointed with the ways our schooling systems are failing our best teachers.
With her permission, I'm going to share Sarah’s statement of resignation. 🧵
I’ve had the privilege working w/schools across WA state this month. The comment I’m taking w/me was from a teacher: “I’ve always looked at student work & noticed what is not known & then nit pick all of the wrong. Now I’m going to look at all that kids DO know and go from there”
Fantastic two days of learning with @SVUSDSchools teachers digging into @IllustrateMath. My favorite part was listening to these educators share how they will use IM to support all their learners!
So much amazing information gleaned from listening to students in Centers. @IpswichPublic Thanks for your input @MrsWelchGrade3 @Miss_Woodworth https://t.co/YENE5mEbUG
I’m wondering about moving the teacher discussion forward from “rightness” and “wrongness” to a noticing what understanding is there and what next steps would be there for the classroom teacher, or if there are trends like this on other quizzes etc
What are your thoughts on this piece of student work, and no points given. Quite the PLC debate today! What would your next teacher moves be? Questions for this student? #mtbos@shankifymath218@mdoconnell16 I’m looking to you for great thoughts!
Amazing mathematicians at work today @BismarckSchools in Julie Eder’s 3rd grade. Thinking and talking about fractions, what they mean, where they land on an open number line, & why the whole matters. So much sense making! @learnbps @ExploreMTBoS
I used to have a sticky note on my desk that just said, "You're not marking errors. You're identifying trends."
This is one of the most important pieces of advice regarding feedback I can offer.
Kids don't need to know what they did wrong. They need to know what to learn next.
@TracyZager I wonder how using thinking strategies could be helpful here & cross over? "How does your background knowledge help you know what number to choose?" or maybe determining importance, "I think this pile of blocks is large, so I think it's important to choose a 'big' number..."
If you have not sat down to read "Phenomenal Teaching" by @wendywardhoffer with pen and highlighter in hand do so...now! It is the perfect mix of empathy and heart; research, pedagogy and clarity. So good. ❤️
Does anyone have any resources on addition/subtraction strategy progressions: specifically, what would say, a benchmark strategy be for the beginning of 2nd grade be versus the end of 2nd grade and so on? #MTBoS#iteachmath
@tara_heydt @AnnEliseRecord @pearse_margie@tara_heydt have you dug into "Understanding the Math We Teach..." it has some great activities in chapter 8!
