I wrote about the intersection of state and sexual violence in Japanese American concentration camps, "good victims," and selective historical memory. https://t.co/pmC5xzZiC6
I want to know their names, who and what they loved, the people they had waiting for them at home, everything they hoped for. I want to know the fabric of their days and the contexts of their lives.
I don't think "if you defund us then we'll only keep the white officers," is the convincing argument they think it is. It is this kind of abusive hostage-taking that has enabled Seattle Police to avoid accountability for so long.
"Hold us accountable and we'll have to hurt you."
A reminder. Nonprofits are NOT movements. At their best, nonprofits support movements with their skills, resources, labor & connections. But nonprofits will not bring about the transformative, visionary change we need. That comes from the movement.
White people: have you ever "needed" to call the police? If so, for what? And how did it go? The hypothesis: most people have never actually needed a cop, and if they have, it was for something the state could easily provide an alternate solution for besides "cops."
Saying we can’t abolish police because what about rape, murder and assault completely ignores 1) that police fail most victims of violence 2) all the rape, murder and assault the police commit themselves
I hope people never forget that the U.S. had the wealth, resources, state employees, and political wherewithal to gather a rapid centralized response to police, antagonize, and repress Black Lives Matter protests but not to fight a global pandemic
.@MayorJenny do you also want to acknowledge the violence and destruction that's been instigated and perpetuated by your own police force, which you've actively worked to shield from accountability?
I want to acknowledge that much of the violence and destruction, both here in Seattle and across the country, has been instigated and perpetuated by white men.
PRIDE STARTS TOMORROW. BLM DOESN’T END. DON’T LET ME SEE A SINGLE ONE OF YOU FORGET THAT PRIDE BEGAN WITH A BLACK TRANS WOMAN AND A BLACK BUTCH LESBIAN. DO NOT FUCKING FORGET. FIGHT FOR THE PEOPLE WHO GAVE YOU THE POWER TO FIGHT. FIGHT FOR THE BLACK LGBTQ+ PEOPLE.
We don’t have all the answers, and we are constantly striving to do and be better. But we do know this: Silence is compliance, and we want to be the kind of ancestors who were loud and disobedient and stood on the side of justice. #BlackLivesMatter https://t.co/moeu5qr8tU
Why are you writing this in a tweet? Your have Bill Barr's phone number, you're working with him to prematurely lift the consent decree on our own violently abusive police department. Just ask him next time you call.
Cut that shit out, give people space to grieve & rage & feel whatever the fuck they feel, and redirect that energy to supporting your local community organizers who are doing real movement work between election cycles.
PSA for whoever needs to hear this: The survivors in your life can see you shaming folks for feeling a type of way about having our choices reduced to one fucking rapist vs another fucking rapist.
