An outburst of anger raises your risk of a heart attack by 8.5 times in the two hours that follow it. A 2014 meta-analysis in the European Heart Journal pooled data from nine studies and found that the window after an episode of intense anger is one of the most dangerous periods for the cardiovascular system.

The study was led by Elizabeth Mostofsky at the Harvard School of Public Health. She found that the risk of heart attack was 8.5 times higher, the risk of stroke was 3.6 times higher, and the risk of a dangerous heart rhythm was 9.5 times higher in the two hours after an angry outburst compared to a calm baseline.

The mechanism is a surge of adrenaline and cortisol that raises heart rate, spikes blood pressure, constricts blood vessels, and makes the blood more likely to clot. In a healthy artery this is survivable. In an artery already narrowed by fatty buildup, the surge can dislodge a piece of plaque and trigger a blockage. The anger does not cause the disease. It triggers the event in a body where the disease is already sitting.

The risk was highest for people who were already at cardiovascular risk: smokers, people with high blood pressure, and people with existing heart disease. For a healthy 30-year-old, the absolute risk is still very low even at 8.5 times baseline. For a 55-year-old man with high blood pressure who has not been to a doctor in five years, the same burst of rage is a different proposition.

The two-hour window is the finding. The anger ends, the body takes two hours to come down, and during those two hours the cardiovascular system is running hot in a way that can be measured and, in some cases, can kill. https://t.co/diEq58VvGl
