A look at America’s two flying-wing stealth bombers reveals how decades of combat experience, advancing technology, and evolving threats drive aircraft design. While the B-2 Spirit and B-21 Raider share the same low-observable foundation, their differences highlight how stealth warfare has matured over time.
B-2 Spirit
•The world’s first operational stealth bomber, conceived during the Cold War
•Enormous 172-foot wingspan to maximize range and payload
•Flying-wing configuration optimized for deep-penetration strategic missions
•Design priorities centered on endurance, payload capacity, and radar avoidance
•Exceptionally capable, but highly complex and costly to operate
B-21 Raider
•Next-generation stealth bomber designed for present and future battlefields
•More compact ~132-foot wingspan, enhancing efficiency and survivability
•Cleaner flying-wing geometry with improved edge alignment
•Optimised to defeat modern, multi-band radar and sensor networks
•Built around digital architecture for rapid upgrades and long service life
Conclusion
The B-2 Spirit proved that stealth bombing was not only feasible, but game-changing. The B-21 Raider carries that legacy forward—smaller, smarter, and more adaptable—ensuring the flying-wing bomber remains effective against increasingly sophisticated threats. Same philosophy, refined for a new era of air dominance.
