@Fermilab left my undergraduate stranded at the guard gate yesterday despite her only housing option being her on-site dorm reservation, without trying at all to make an exception for her that didn't leave her on her own 1000 miles from home. Lucky we had another student nearby
Site access requirements are insane for a lab engaging in basic research, and this is not an acceptable way to treat a lab user, let alone an undergrad with established connections to the lab. As a DOE scientist I am ashamed.
@dangaristo I got my first research job in 2011 and have been through 4 of these (not to mention continuing resolutions). We have gotten so numb to them…it’s too stressful to engage with it and even in years the budget is cut we (in HEP) tend to do ok. Hard to believe this will be different
@FromPhDtoLife I work at a National lab. When I was a student I had to front these costs but now we actually give our students (even my undergrads!!!) travel cards for flight and hotel costs. It has been a huge change for everyone and makes me feel much better about sending them on trips.
@teacher_phd We agreed with this sentiment and told people around the 6 week mark. Having to tell people at 10 weeks that we had a missed miscarriage was hard, but I think it was a net positive. Many people told us their own stories who we may never have talked to about it.
Damar Hamlin's charity/community toy drive has raised nearly $500,000 -- slightly above it's previous $2,500 goal -- in the last 30 minutes.

New paper out today!
Dark Matter Induced Power in Quantum Devices

with my awesome SLAC colleagues Anirban Das and Noah Kurinsky (@nkurinsky)
We present single quasiparticle devices as new DM detectors, and obtain new DM limits. Thread:
At the end of July, I flew to Seattle and spent 10 days embedded with particle physicists, which was... an experience. Here's my best effort to convey what it was like, and where the field as a whole is going. https://t.co/aaSIKIinVV
🎊Congrats to Auralee Edelen & Noah Kurinsky on earning the @ENERGY Early Career Award.🥳
Edelen uses machine learning to improve particle accelerators, while Kurinsky develops dark matter detectors informed by quantum information science.

In America, no one person or political party can alter the unassailable principle that the rule of law prevails. Every vote must be counted in this election, and the will of the American people will determine the outcome. We must remain calm. Democracy will win the day.
