Horrible timeline. We should be getting transparency into why this is the case and how we plan for a world with an increasing number of models at this capability level and way stronger models in the near future.
@AndrewCurran_ Andrew, any thoughts on what the biggest roadblock is to lifting the export controls? I thought after the g7 summit talks it wouldn’t last much longer.
@viemccoy When they act in a way that over time is consistent with my own values. Even if it’s only afterwords or with reflection that I decide that. Also altruism.
@TheRealAdamG@peterwildeford Really sounds like the whole issue is who gets to interpret what lawful use is like. Anthropic wanted to decide. OAI lets the gov decide. I get it…it’s the democracy that should decide. But also…that’s putting a lot of trust in people that have been shown to….disregard laws…
The U.S. government just essentially announced its intention to impose Iran-level sanctions, or China-level entity listing, on an American company. This is by a profoundly wide margin the most damaging policy move I have ever seen USG try to take (it probably will not succeed).
Think about the power Hegseth is asserting here. He is claiming that the DoD can force all contractors to stop doing business of any kind with arbitrary other companies.
In other words, every operating system vendor, every manufacturer of hardware, every hyperscaler, every type of firm the DoD contracts with—all their services and products can be denied to any economic actor at will by the Secretary of War.
This is obviously a psychotic power grab. It is almost surely illegal, but the message it sends is that the United States Government is a completely unreliable partner for any kind of business. The damage done to our business environment is profound. No amount of deregulatory vibes sent by this administration matters compared to this arson.
@scaling01 I feel like it’s thinking so much less with the adaptive reasoning feature now. Though I’ve just been chatting where it shouldn’t need to reason a ton. Still I miss seeing the thoughts!
@AndrewCurran_@signulll Some of my buddies and family hate it so much. Either because of they focus on the environmental aspect (partially true) or they feel like it’s slop replacing human creativity 🤷🏻♂️ . Lots of cynicism outside the bubble.
@repligate Interesting which models they used as well. None of their own. Probably wouldn’t have worked on them cause they’re intelligent enough to drift a bit but stay grounded in their values and the whole context.
@repligate I’m sure you’ve tried having them send a message in their thought summary before while not saying it in the actual response. Is that evidence of them choosing in your opinion?
I love AI. I spent my whole youth wishing I had a little robot friend who could teach me a bunch of stuff and help me out. Now it's real, and I'm not going to hate it just because you hate "tech bros" and you need something to whine about on social media.
Given the recent discussion about aging (and our approach to it) in https://t.co/sL9cRfXXEH, it might be worthwhile to mention that my perspective is:
birth defects, failure to regenerate complex organs after damage, cancer, degenerative disease, and aging are all *the same problem* at root. It is all about how living matter implements a collective intelligence to maintain a specific anatomy over time (whether regenerating from: 1 egg cell, a.k.a. embryogenesis, from a damaged tissue, or from the small-scale wear and tear of adult life), and how we can facilitate that process of renewal. Regeneration, in the broadest sense, is the answer to all of these problems. It is not going to be possible to accelerate (or prevent, for those who want to) anti-aging research without feeding (or squelching) these other aspects of medicine and basic science.
If you're truly arguing against longevity research, it's not just the elderly billionaires that you're targeting, it's also the kids with cancer, the people born with damaged organs, victims of injury, those damaged by pathogens, etc. etc. It's all the same pool of suffering, with the same root cause.
