Congratulations to the 2027 Theory & Computation subgroup awardees!! 🎉 @BiophysicalSoc
Mid Career: Anđela Šarić; Early Career: @smnlssn; Postdocs: Chelsea Brown and Mohammad Ahsan 🎉 Sponsored by the Chicago Center for Theoretical Chemistry & PRXlife.
Rest in peace. Claude Cohen-Tannoudji wrote what is practically the Bible of quantum mechanics, a two-volume tome known for being especially rigorous.
I have fond memories of his book being whipped out in the Levitt group to resolve arguments over unitary transformations!
🚀 We’re hiring at the Quantum Device Lab at ETH Zurich!
Are you passionate about micro- and nanofabrication and eager to advance the frontiers of quantum technology?
We are looking for a Cleanroom Fabrication Engineer (100%, Zurich, fixed-term) to join our interdisciplinary group at the Quantum Device Lab (@qudev), within the Department of Physics (@ETH_physics) and affiliated with the @ETHQuantumCntr at @ETH_en.
In this role, you will play a central part in scaling our superconducting quantum processor chips incorporating tens to hundreds of qubits as we push toward building large-scale, fault-tolerant quantum computers.
🔬 What You’ll Be Doing
As our Cleanroom Fabrication Engineer, you will bridge state-of-the-art semiconductor processing with cutting-edge quantum physics:
• Device Fabrication & Process Development: Execute and optimize micro- and nanofabrication runs while pioneering novel processing techniques—such as high-aspect-ratio Through-Silicon-Vias (TSVs) via deep reactive-ion etching (DRIE) and conformal thin-film deposition.
• Yield Improvement & Metrology: Establish rigorous process control and systematic inspection routines to continuously boost fabrication yield for complex quantum chips.
• Coherence Optimization: Work hand-in-hand with fabrication engineers and experimental physicists across our lab to evaluate how fabrication parameters directly impact qubit coherence metrics.
• World-Class Cleanroom Facilities: Utilize state-of-the-art infrastructure across three leading cleanrooms in the Zurich area:
– FIRST at ETH Hönggerberg: https://t.co/GsNRdAVrYq
– BRNC at IBM Research Rüschlikon: https://t.co/4OHH5tjac1
– PICO at Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI) Villigen: https://t.co/wsBbsMFvps
🎯 Who We’re Looking For
• Education: Master’s degree (or PhD) in micro/nanofabrication, physics, materials science, electrical engineering, or a related field.
• Hands-on Cleanroom Background: Practical experience in lithography, dry/wet etching, thin-film deposition, and surface metrology.
• Mindset & Skills: Strong attention to detail, structured work habits, excellent teamwork, and fluency in English.

The U.S. has designated helium as a critical material, citing its importance to semiconductor production and growing supply chain risks.
The designation comes as the war with Iran strains the global helium supply.
60 Minutes reported on the shortage on Sunday, including its impact on scientific research. Joe Sachleben, technical director at an NMR lab at the University of Chicago, says there is no substitute for helium. Without enough of it, researchers could be forced to decide which machines to “sacrifice.” https://t.co/6MpnWU3v2L
