I agreed with Harry, but . . .
Harry is saying the question of Adam’s future as Mayor should be through an election.
Until a week ago, I publicly agreed with this position.
But, there is a process that could be apolitical and transparent to consider @NYCMayor removal. It is a process that does not leave a conflicted official in place—one who has no public confidence at all.
And we need look no further than the law.
Here it is:
Step 1: @GovKathyHochul presents the SDNY indictment as her charges, appoints a special prosecutor, and immediately suspends Adams.
Step 2: First Deputy Mayor serves as Mayor during suspension.
Step 3: Special Prosecutor publicly presents evidence from SDNY case (within 20 days).
Step 4: Adams presents his evidence (within 20 days).
Step 5: Governor decides whether to remove him (by April 15).
Putting aside all the political posturing, a solution like this is in the best interests of New Yorkers. It could even be done with a faster cycle (since the law doesn’t proscribe the exact process) to keep alive the possibility of a special election.
Of course, none of this is rocket science. But it won’t happen for one reason: all of the career politicians who make the decisions DON’T REALLY WANT IT TO HAPPEN.
Each has some reason OTHER THAN our best interests.
Where I disagree with Harry is this: getting the decision makers to DO THE RIGHT THING is an act of heroism. But only because the bar has been set so low!
Doing the right thing is apolitical, Harry.
- The public should see the proof, especially of obstruction.
-Adams should present his defense.
-The Governor should make a decision based on the evidence and NOT on politics.
Were I Governor, this is PRECISELY what I would do.
