One of the most important things to understand about automobile centrism is how godawful ugly it is. Compact, walkable places built with a fraction of the resources and no architectural review are far more beautiful. They are also cheaper to build and maintain.
@nspc Booo, go away. Most people will get more money back in their rebate than they pay.
And yeah, people need a car to drive because the city and province do nothing to give actually affordable ways to get around like public transit and biking.
@Tim_Bousquet This is so sad. Planning whole new pieces to the city without prioritizing active transport and public transport is such an oversight.
As Halifax grows, getting around is going to become excruciatingly hard if we rely solely on cars.
And yeah, autonomous vehicles ain't it.
@Tim_Bousquet @PhilMoscovitch I moved from Halifax (where I grew up and virtually never road a bike) to Utrecht, Netherlands. In Utrecht, there are no "cyclists" but tens of thousands of people getting around who happen to be on bikes.
When it's safe and easy to bike, everyone will do it.
Cities can be good, but you gotta let people build things and pay for the space they're taking up (looking at you, cars).

@Brent_Ritchie @BikeMayorHfx Totally agree! I live in Utrecht (the city pictured above), but I'm from Halifax. In the Netherlands they fully moved away from requiring helmets and the argument is very strong.
