@japan_nobunaga I’ve always only used a kettle on the stove. I know most use an electric kettle. Many may not know since afternoon or ceremonial tea isn’t a part of everyday life here. Just many different people with many different backgrounds and upbringings.
@tedcruz Well, they didn’t. But for things that did happen, why would you get on a plane to Cancun (was it?) when your state was being covered in ice? Glass houses, you know.
@Umad80 It’s always back to Biden with you types. You’re not defending Trump by saying “well yeah, but what about when Biden…” then lists arbitrary, unrelated nonsense. Stop defending Trump and stop fixating on Biden. My god just have some sense.
I was a sophomore in college when it all happened. I was driving to my friend’s house and saw the second plane hit on TV. The anxiety of reliving those moments in this format is very real, but also I’m glad that my daughters can now understand and see it in real-time.
@NikiaSarang I’m so very sorry. I can never find the word to describe what I think of cancer so let’s just go with Fuck Cancer😞 sending you so much love right now.
My neighbor was leaving for vacation and said, "Hey, hold down the fort while I'm gone."
I did not know this was a figure of speech.
I am a samurai.
A fort is a fort.
I made a perimeter map.
I checked the fence line twice a day, at dawn and at dusk.
I memorized the delivery truck's schedule.
I identified the enemy. It was a raccoon.
We engaged three times. I will not say who won.
On the fourth night, a storm came.
A fort is weakest in a storm.
So I stood watch on his porch from 9 PM to 2 AM, in the rain.
His security camera saw me.
His wife, who had not left yet, called my phone. "What are you doing?"
"Holding down the fort," I said.
There was a long silence.
"Do you... want a flashlight?"
She brought me a flashlight and a thermos of coffee.
She did not laugh.
She said, "The fort thanks you."
When my neighbor came home, I handed him a full report.
Fence secure. Deliveries normal. Raccoon situation ongoing.
He read the whole report standing in his driveway.
Then he straightened his back, looked me in the eye, and said:
"Well held, soldier."
Now, whenever anyone on our street goes on vacation, they come to me first.
They say the words formally, like a transfer of command.
"The fort is yours."
I accept.
I have held down eleven forts.
Last week, I found a badge in my mailbox.
The neighborhood had made it for me.
It says FORT COMMANDER.
I did not ask for this rank.
I will not give it back.
I wear it on patrol.
This account is my favorite thing online right now. His perspective is outstanding to read! Also, I already know a guy with a truck but if anyone else needs a guy here’s your guy.
I needed to move a sofa.
I mentioned this to an American. He said, "You know anybody with a truck?"
I did not know anybody with a truck.
He looked at me with real concern. Not pity. Concern. The way you look at a man who has told you he does not have a name.
"You gotta know somebody with a truck."
I asked how one acquires such a person.
He said, "You just do."
This is the third time I have received that answer in this country. It is the answer to everything here. You just do. There is no process. There is only the eventual fact of having.
He said, "Ask Kevin."
I do not know a Kevin. He said Kevin like I should. He said it the way you say a shared uncle.
I met Kevin four days later. Kevin owns a truck. Kevin does not own a truck for himself. Nobody owns a truck for themselves. Kevin owns a truck for a fifteen mile radius.
Inside I said: THIS MAN HAS TAKEN A VOW. HE DID NOT ANNOUNCE IT. HE SIMPLY PURCHASED A BED AND ACCEPTED THE CONSEQUENCES.
Kevin arrived on Saturday. He brought the truck. He also brought a second man.
I had not asked for a second man.
The second man's name is Tony. Tony came because Kevin came. Tony did not know me. Tony did not ask what we were moving. Tony brought gloves.
They moved the sofa in eleven minutes.
I offered them money. Both of them laughed at the same time, which felt rehearsed and was not.
I asked what I owed them.
Kevin said, "Buy the pizza."
That is the price. That is the entire economy. The truck costs one pizza and the pizza is not negotiable and the pizza is also not expensive and everyone knows what size.
Inside I said: THE FEE IS FIXED ACROSS THE ENTIRE NATION AND WAS SET BY NO ONE.
We ate on the floor because the sofa was against the wall and none of us wanted to be the first to sit on it.
Tony told me his daughter plays soccer. I asked if she is good. He said, "She's aggressive."
I still think about that.
Three weeks later, Kevin texted me.
"You free Sunday? Helping Tony move a fridge."
He did not ask if I wanted to. He informed me of a fridge.
Inside I said: I HAVE BEEN CALLED UP. I DID NOT ENLIST. THE PAPERS WERE FILED ON MY BEHALF.
I went. I moved the fridge. I have no truck. I contributed only arms.
Afterward, a man I had never met asked me if I knew anybody with a truck.
I said, "Yeah, I got a guy."
I have a guy.
I am somebody's guy now, too. Tony has told two people about me.
He describes me as "the guy who's strong for his size."
I have never been prouder of a sentence in my life.
Tonight, America watched the ramblings of a mad king.
Donald Trump’s address was not about the last election — it was THIS one.
Before a single vote has been cast, he’s already laying the groundwork to rig this election and convince YOU not to trust the results if they don’t go his way.
This is what authoritarians do. Don’t fall for it.
Organize. Mobilize. SHOW UP and VOTE in November!
@tedcruz I live in Tennessee and they are asking the same of us. I know it’s hard for people like you to be considerate to others, but I (a Democrat) put into consideration the men and women who work to keep that infrastructure performing, and how they don’t get time off if shuts down.
