This is really one of every guy’s greatest fears when a girl is sleeping over at his place. Given the legal system in Nigeria, it is understandably so.

If you ever find yourself in this position as a man, I know you will really be panicked and somehow prone to making rash decisions. One thought could suggest disposing of the body of the girl, especially when you feel there won’t be a trace leading to you. Another would suggest that you start calling her family or friends who know both of you, or rush to the police station to report. But that’s not the right thing to do.

When you notice the girl who visited you is unresponsive and appears to have died in her sleep at your place, if you have neighbors, raise an alarm and have them come over. Tell them that you have been trying to wake her and she is not responding. Do not attempt to move or tamper with anything unnecessarily. The next thing to do is to rush her to the hospital. If she is truly dead, let a qualified medical professional be the one to certify the death.

Contact a barrister at this point; he will advise you further. The hospital should call her family members, who in turn report to the police. You are safer this way than going to the police directly to report her dead. You are not a doctor. The first question you will be asked is, “How do you know that she was dead?” When the case starts properly, with the hospital report and an autopsy, you have stronger chances of getting free.

This is not really a position I wish for any man to be in. I perfectly understand guys who insist on no sleepovers: a girl visits during the day, they do anything they want to, and see her off. But if you ever find yourself in such a position at any point in your life, you can go about it this way. It won’t completely save you, of course, the law will still take its course because a life has just been lost, but it will make things easier for you.
