There’s a reason your favourite politician isn’t insulting his estranged allies but merely reposting your crude takes on them to hint at a feud. It’s because he has left his door to reconciliation half-open, and one phone call or meeting could resolve the situation, however dire it may seem.

As a young person just starting out in life or public service, you can’t anchor your future in making unnecessary enemies for yourself or cutting ties with your peers in your 20s, 30s, or even 40s. Some of the politicians you support don’t even have ten years of active political life left, so why are you making enemies over politicians who are merely having their last dance on the political stage? Biology is a reality of life.

The friends you antagonise to wage a war you don’t even fully understand—a pointless war—may be around for the next fifty years, half a century after your favourite politicians have left the stage, leaving you to deal with the consequences of this miscalculated tragedy.

I am not asking you to refrain from expressing your honest views about a particular politician or from cutting ties with your friends over your allegiance to one. However, make sure you are doing so based on personal conviction and not merely to impress your so-called master, whose true colours you may see the day you and his so-called enemy’s son attempt to woo his daughter’s hand in marriage. You will know your real status that day.

The political class is one big family, and like every family, it has greed and grievances, its bad and good days. They share a goal that doesn’t include you, and that’s to stay at the top of the food chain. Even the happiest families fight. So, your naïveté is taking sides in a political feud, believing that the antagonists are permanently estranged. No matter how publicised their grievances, there’s always one currency that brings them together: interest.

Even the most alienated political rivals remain closer to one another than to their most fanatical supporters. They share stakes in the same businesses, their children attend the same schools, date and marry one another, play in the same parks, travel in the same cabin on the plane, and live as neighbours in Asokoro, Maitama, Cairo, and Dubai.

On one hand , I want PBAT to intervene in the ongoing leadership tussle if the house of assembly in Lagos. On the hand, I want him to actually step back and watch how it plays out.
