New data from the Almenda Center
reveals the scale of a problem we have been speaking about for years. 

In the 2025–2026 academic year, 1,980 schools are operating under russian standards in the temporarily occupied territories. More than 582,000 Ukrainian children are forced to study there — under pressure and fear. 

But behind these figures a harsh system designed to destroy national identity — a system russia has built to break an entire generation of Ukrainian children.  

First, militarization. Hundreds of thousands of children have already been involved in  the “Movement of the First” and “Yunarmiya,” where there are no normal clubs or creative activities for development. These organizations are designed to prepare our children and teenagers for service in the enemy’s army — the very army fighting against their own country. 

Second, fear. Parents are forced to send their children to these schools under the threat of losing parental rights. Teenagers are not allowed to express pro-Ukrainian views, as this can lead to persecution. 

Third, the erasure of identity. The Ukrainian language and history have been removed from the curriculum. Children are systematically indoctrinated with a different worldview — one in which the country they were born in and lived in before the war no longer exists. 

As a person who has spent over 20 years defending children’s rights, I see this as a direct attack on the future of our country. The occupier is counting on a “silent generation” that will eventually forget its home. At Save Ukraine, we see the eyes of children who have escaped this system every day — children who endured pressure but managed to preserve who they are. 

At Save Ukraine, we work every day with children who have escaped occupation. They are all different, but they share one thing — they have all gone through immense pressure. And despite everything, they have held on to themselves. 

But thousands of children still remain there. And this means that their return and support is not only a humanitarian task — it is a matter of the country’s future. We must give them real
opportunities: to leave, to study, to recover. We must show them that Ukraine remembers them and is fighting for them. 

Every child who manages to escape that trap is a life saved. And it is yet another proof that we can stand against this system.

Today, Russia sentenced Ukrainian teenagers to years of imprisonment.

Viktor Azarovskyi — 8 years and 6 months.
Oleh Shokol — 7 years and 6 months.
Denys Vasylyk — 7 years.

Children from an occupied territory were accused of “terrorism” and tried as citizens of the Russian Federation.

On March 19, 2026, the Southern District Military Court in Rostov-on-Don delivered its verdict against three teenagers from the temporarily occupied city of Melitopol.

At the time of their detention in the fall of 2023, they were only 16–17 years old.

For more than two years, they were unlawfully held in inhumane conditions, subjected to beatings, torture, and psychological pressure.

hey were transferred between multiple detention facilities, including Detention Center No. 2 in Mariupol and Detention Center No. 2 in Taganrog, which is known for the severe abuse of Ukrainian civilians and prisoners of war.

According to Viktor Azarovskyi’s lawyer, his health significantly deteriorated in Taganrog: he was unable to sleep or eat, and his hands were covered in severe skin lesions.

Despite the unlawful transfer of the teenagers from occupied territory and the questionable nature of the evidence, Russia brought serious charges against them. The trial was held behind closed doors, without access for independent observers or international organizations.

This is not justice. This is the persecution of children and a war crime.

Russia systematically uses unlawful detention, torture, and sham trials as tools of pressure against Ukrainian children, in violation of international humanitarian law.

That is why the return of every Ukrainian child remains an unconditional priority for Ukraine.

You won’t find two states as fundamentally different as Ukraine and Russia.
Just watched “Nobody Against Putin” and then rewatched “2000 Meters to Andriivka”. There’s no clearer way to feel how different our cultures are, how wide the gap is between our mindsets, behaviors, ways of thinking, and our people. A typical French, Israeli, American, or British person would understand Ukrainians far more easily than a Russian.

Proximity to the border doesn’t matter — this border isn’t just a line dividing territories; it’s a bottomless abyss, shaped by centuries of different histories, cultures, and customs. You won’t find two states as fundamentally different as Ukraine and Russia.
