Printing metal made easy! 🖊️
Most metal 3D printing today relies on heat.
Lasers or electron beams melt metal powder or wire, fuse it, and let it solidify again.
That works, but it’s inefficient: a lot of energy is lost before it ever reaches the material, and even more is wasted as heat dissipates into the surroundings.
This work explores a very different idea. Instead of melting metal, it uses high-frequency, low-amplitude mechanical vibrations to temporarily lower a metal’s yield stress and enhance atomic diffusion.
Under these conditions, metal can be shaped and joined without full melting.
By combining shaping and joining at the same time, the researchers introduce a new additive manufacturing process called Resonance-Assisted Deposition (RAD).
Because it avoids melt–solidification, RAD is far more energy-efficient and enables things that are difficult or impossible with conventional methods.
