2026 Referee Preseason meeting recap 🎥🏀
During RPSM, NBA Referees come together for an intensive week of preparation—reviewing hundreds of plays, completing physical fitness testing, taking a 50-question rules exam and studying the points of emphasis that will guide play-calling in the season ahead.
It’s a week built around education, consistency and setting expectations before the first whistle of the season.
Save this for a look inside how NBA Referees prepare for the season—and share it with a fan who wants to know more about what goes into officiating at the highest level.
Johnnies fans, forget refereeing mistakes. I've seen them for 50 years. Tough game to officiate. We lost because of our defense and Villanova’s excellent play. Excuses are a sign of weakness. All the credit goes to them. Coaches make mistakes, players make mistakes and refs make mistakes.
One last thought on Officiating. Why would anybody do this job at any level? Go to a Little League game, AAU tournament or a high school game and parents & fans are complete idiots. (Yeah, you👀)
A ref today offered to show a coach over the back in the rule book when being questioned about his call.
I offered to join that teaching season. I signed @brentblum up too.
The rules are just ink on paper.
Without us, they are easily bent and broken.
We relish the challenge of using them to craft a game fairly played.....
We are sports officials.
Some cool news from the NCAA Basketball Committee: 2026 Final Four in Indy also will include D2 and D3 title games as well as semis and finals of the NIT. A veritable hoops feast.

2 minutes of exquisite storytelling, detailed journalism and a prophetic prediction for the future of sports.
Lastly, before I sign off. Our first season on here without @jwasports . John brought integrity, transparency and a love of officiating to basketball. He was always willing to engage and chat on here with folks. I’ve tried to do as much as I can to help honor him. We miss him.
For fun throwback..... 2010 Final Four officials were....
Les Jones, Jamie Luckie, Mike Stuart
Randy McCall, Curtis Shaw, John Higgins
National Championship Game:

Where has time gone? Feels like yesterday!
