Today is World Ocean Day and our oceans are being bombarded by all kinds of threats like pollution, over-fishing, acidification, etcâŠ
But as a meteorologist, Iâll discuss the rapid warming!
We often focus on air temperatures. But the real story is in the oceans.
More than 90% of the excess heat trapped by greenhouse gases is retained in the ocean.
Each year a new assessment is released, and in 2025 the worldâs oceans gained an astounding 23 zettajoules (ZJ) of heat.
In relatable terms thatâs equivalent to:
đ 37 years of humanityâs current annual energy consumption
đ About 380 million Hiroshima-sized atomic bombs worth of energy
đ More than 200 times the worldâs annual electricity generation
And thatâs just one year!
Why does this matter?
Warmer oceans can fuel marine heatwaves, coral bleaching and death, sea level rise through thermal expansion, contribute to bigger land heatwaves, and provide more energy for heavy rainfall and tropical cyclones. Ocean warming also stresses marine ecosystems that support fisheries, biodiversity, and coastal economies around the world.
The ocean has shielded us from much greater atmospheric warming by absorbing the vast majority of Earthâs excess heat. But that protection comes with growing consequences for ocean health.
On this World Ocean Day, itâs worth remembering that the ocean is not just responding to climate change, itâs bearing the brunt! We must protect our oceans.

đš BBC investigation into child deaths in Gaza (full report from Aug 2025):
The BBC World Service examined over 160 cases of children shot during the war. In 95 of those cases, the child was shot in the head or chest â many with no other injuries â and most victims were under 12. The cases span from the first weeks of the conflict up to July 2025.
In dozens of the head/chest cases, eyewitnesses and medics (via human rights groups) alleged the shots came from Israeli forces in areas where the IDF was operating. Two cases were attributed to Palestinian gunfire.
The Israeli military told the BBC: âIntentional harm to civilians, especially children, is strictly prohibitedâ and said it investigates such incidents.
This is the raw BBC reporting â no exaggeration, no dismissal. The pattern is deeply disturbing and deserves full, transparent investigation by all sides.
For hours, rescuers waited miles away from where journalist Amal Khalil was taking refuge, injured, but still alive inside a building that had been leveled by an Israeli airstrike.
Rescuers were denied access to her during a crucial period when she was still alive. https://t.co/ARKOfm0sIC
79% of Australians have an unfavourable view of Israel, 90% of younger people. So why does the government keep supporting Israel and ignoring its genocidal behavour in Gaza and Lebanon?
Why canât they see what everyone else can see right in front of them?

"If a person has ugly thoughts, it begins to show on the face. And when that person has ugly thoughts every day, every week, every year, the face gets uglier and uglier until you can hardly bear to look at it." - Roald Dahl

@woolyonezeez@YaThinkN I remember in school learning about how in the 1700s people in England were locked up for stealing a loaf of bread & how terrible it was that the people had no help & how we are so much more enlightened now
sometimes i think about the absolute hell in which whales must live, enduring endless, inescapable machine noise from boats that also wrecks their ability to communicate with one another
@nvolpewild I grew up in a small town in the country. They fucking hate the bush, they think itâs funny to say âif it moves, shoot it, if it doesnât, choose it downâ They canât live without their air conditioning & donât even grow their own food even though they have so much land
This is extremely important. Later this year the world will suffer two simultaneous disasters: the collateral damage of Trump and Netanyahuâs stupid war, and the biggest El Niño ever.
An audience member at a Q&A recently asked me why I'm so apocalyptic. The genocide in Gaza, beyond being a tragedy, marks an irreversible shift in the global world order. Before the genocide, the imperialist ambitions of the Western oligarchic class were partially constrained by the utopian ideal of the rules-based order. Now that ideal is gone, and unrestrained barbarity will characterize the methodology of the war-making ruling class. In other words â our future is an apocalyptic one.
