Formerly occupied areas outside the city of Kherson, Ukraine, fields lay fallow after Russian forces destroyed irrigation and farming machinery required for agriculture. Add to that a million tiny white flags tied to grass and twigs, each one marking a land mine.

Our team was here last week working in front line communities and talking with families about the challenges and hardship of restarting their livelihood again. All the while, bombs and missiles continued taking lives and destroying the toil of good people.

While our team held events for children and their families, explosions and air raid sirens howled and shook the ground every hour. His family have endured the war for two years in Kyiv. What he saw and experienced this week outside Kherson was on another level of magnitude.

and made repairs to the community playground. We don’t just leave behind a fun memory, we left trauma informed kits to help the kids find their way through their experience of war.

Today The Novi Community worked in a village that had 500 residents before the war started and now has less than 100. While we worked with the kids and their parents inside the bombed cultural center, another team of amazing volunteers from EWay Chernivtsi set up a swing set…

They then got to identify their emotions of fear, sadness, anger, and joy. In the end, they decorated their portraits with hands that symbolize WHAT helps them and hearts that symbolize WHO helps them.

Drones and artillery pound the village with surprising frequency. Missiles recently destroyed houses here. Lives have been lost. In this part of the world, children pray at night: “If I die tonight, let me go to heaven.”
