I just finished Anne Lamott's "Bird by Bird." It's a delightful read filled with advice on writing and life.
Here are 9 highlights:
1. You can read all the books on the craft and study the greatest writers, but at some point, you have to just sit down and write. "If I sit there long enough, something will happen."
2. Publication will not solve all your problems or make you great. "If you’re not enough before the publication, you won’t be enough with it either."
3. All good writing begins with a terrible first effort.
4. Use dialogue to reveal your character's personality. "One line of dialogue that rings true reveals character in a new way that pages of description can’t."
5. Plot grows out of character. Don’t force your characters into a plot.
6. For short stories, use the ABCDE framework: Action, Background, Development, Climax, and Ending.
7. When you write dialogue, you're not producing actual speech, "You’re translating the sound and rhythm of what a character says into words.”
8. Don't learn about people from books. Learn about people from people.
9. If you want to write, you have to read. "You wouldn’t be a writer if reading hadn’t enriched your soul more than other pursuits."
For me, today's a day of remembering. When my husband and I were four gunshots away from death's door. It has been 10 years last April. It's a blessing to be alive. So let's live. Let's strive to be happy. Desiderata.
READ. The Philippine Competition Commission says it's monitoring the proposed acquisition of Sky Cable Corp by PLDT, and notes that PLDT's previous attempts in 2020 and 2022 to buy Sky Cable were rescinded.
