A doctor is kicked inside a hospital—his workplace, his battlefield.
When he fights back, suddenly “inquiry”, “ethics”, “decorum” become trending words.

Let’s be clear:
Doctors are not punching bags.
Hospitals are not boxing rings for frustrated relatives.

Self-defence is NOT misconduct.
Silence in the face of violence is NOT professionalism.

If the system can’t protect doctors, don’t expect them to stand still and bleed.
Respect is earned—but safety is a right.

A tired pilot is grounded.
A tired doctor is glorified.
WHY?

IMA has said it clearly: doctors in India are forced into 24–48 hour shifts, without regulated duty hours, rest, or safety — despite Supreme Court recommendations.

Fatigue in aviation = safety hazard.
Fatigue in healthcare = “sacrifice”?

This isn’t dedication.
This is systemic abuse.

Exhausted doctors make fatigued decisions.
Fatigued decisions cost patients’ lives.

If pilots deserve regulated hours to protect passengers,
why are the lives handled by doctors treated differently?

Enough token statements.
We need enforceable duty-hour limits, mandatory rest, adequate staffing, and legal protection — NOW.

Doctor safety = Patient safety.
Ignore this, and the system bleeds.

The decline in top rankers choosing surgery isn’t about students changing—it’s about the system they’re entering.

Surgical residency still carries the image of long hours, hierarchy, limited mentorship, and delayed operative independence. And earlier, surgery was the primary procedural branch—if you wanted to “do something with your hands,” you chose surgery.

That’s no longer the case.

Today, most medical superspecialties offer procedures too. So procedural satisfaction + financial security is now possible without a decade-long surgical training journey.

So students aren’t running away from hard work—they’re choosing environments that feel structured, supported.

Instead of criticising their choices, we need to reform surgical training—respect, mentorship, monitored hands-on opportunities, simulation labs, mental-health support, and cultures that build surgeons rather than break them.
