I just saw a video of Gwalior MP, Anil Mishra, and DSP Hina Khan.

The MP was encroaching on the road for his birthday celebration. And the police confronted him.

Anil Mishra shouted, "This is against Sanatan Jai Shri Ram!"

DSP Hina Khan responded: "Jai Shri Ram, Jai Jai Shree Ram, Jai Jai Shree Ram...anything else?"

Anil Mishra was left red-faced, and I can see a lot of people praising Hina Khan's presence of mind.

I appreciate Hina Khan's pragmatic approach. However, there are major issues with this strategy.

1. This represents a complete surrender to Hindutva bullying. Consider a Muslim doing something similar and saying "Allah hu Akbar" in front of a police officer. Would you be okay with a Hindu police officer chanting "Allahu Akbar"?

2. An MP was physically encroaching on public space for his personal celebration, which happened to be his birthday. And, while breaking the law, he was attempting to communalize his crime because he knew the police officer was Muslim.

Doesn't this set off alarms in your head? Imagine his arrogance and disregard for the law. And worse, normalization of this kind of hateful behavior.

3. Hina Khan, who was aware of her identity, was genuinely forced, not coerced, into saying JSR to save face.

She realized that if she didn't solve this problem quickly, she'd have to face the repercussions.

Hina Khan, who studied hard and passed the top exam of India, under India's constitution, which guarantees her equality and dignity.

At that crucial point knew, that in order to save face, she would have to make a compromise on her equality and dignity.

It's simply disgraceful.

I had to write this because the casual acceptance of profoundly communal and hateful behavior is becoming more common in India even by progressives.

And perhaps we are too powerless to do anything about it, but we can at least openly discuss it and call it what it is.

Because this is highly communal and hateful behavior that we refuse to acknowledge openly these days.

जो आज मुश्किल घड़ी से गुज़र रहा है, वो दशकों बाद मिलने वाली पेंशन की उम्मीद से क्या करेगा? और जो रिटायर हो चुका है, वो 3 साल तक इंतज़ार करके क्या करेगा?

The Central Government’s refusal to waive the loans of those affected by the devastating Wayanad landslides of 2024 is shocking. Especially while the loans of certain large business houses are waived without hesitation. These loans represent the lives of people who have endured unimaginable pain for no fault of theirs- they total up to a minuscule amount in comparison.

The Hon’ble Kerala High Court has observed- when people have most needed help, the Union Government has failed them. I couldn’t agree more.
