NATO has finally put its conventional war plan into plain English.

If Russia attacks allied territory, NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander says the alliance will block the assault, blunt its momentum, then break the military system sustaining it, including logistics, communications and command.

Good. Moscow now knows what a conventional war could cost.

But there is a glaring hole.

Russia is already attacking Europe below that threshold: sabotage, cyber operations, drones, proxy networks, infrastructure attacks and suspected assassination plots.

NATO knows how it intends to win the war Russia cannot afford to start.

What Europe still lacks is an equally clear theory for winning the war Russia is already fighting.

Has Israeli settler violence in the West Bank become organized terrorism? What you’re seeing in this video is a Palestinian father and his child being surrounded in a Mafia-style ambush by extremist Jewish settlers in the West Bank who blocked the movement of his car, beat him up, and took his vehicle. The man is seen running away and, bizarrely, leaving his child behind - something that’s strange for a father to do but should be quite revelatory of the extent of the terror he must have felt at the moment, and how much he will live with this shame and sense of helplessness. The Israeli military says that it takes this incident seriously and will look into it; but as we have seen in the last two years, nothing comes of these investigations. Just last weekend, the head of the Shin Bet/Shabak yelled at settler leaders for how Jewish settlers are burning Palestinian homes with zero accountability. Prime Minister Netanyahu has condemned this time and again, and so have heads of regional councils and leaders of the settler movement. But nothing has happened, nothing has changed, and the problem is getting exponentially worse.

I want you to consider the following: when people throughout the world, but particularly in the Middle East, see this type of scene time and again and again, they are not thinking that these are just a fringe part of the settler movement. Instead, this behavior is ascribed to the entire settlement enterprise, on territories that are part of what is internationally recognized as Palestinian, even if you think this is disputed territory that’s part of “Judea and Samaria.” Worse, many across the world identify this behavior with the entirety of Israelis and the Jewish state, further bolstering the narrative of settler colonialism that is violent, aggressive, exclusionary, and inherently anti the Palestinian people living on lands which have been part of their heritage and identity for hundreds of years.

So I pose this question to you: if Israel’s Prime Minister, the army, the security services, and even the settler movement itself denounce this behavior, why then does nothing happen for over two years while Palestinians are systematically attacked, injured, killed, and have their properties damaged and burned? And please don’t cite the false and thoroughly debunked story of Jewish shepherds having their flocks attacked, poisoned, or stolen as the trigger for these confrontations.

It is time for Israeli accountability for allowing violent extremists to be enabled by elements of the Israeli government. It’s time to stand up and challenge this horrid behavior. Settler terrorism is bad for Israelis, Palestinians, human decency, and the very legitimacy of the Jewish state.

Wer August Hanning vor Gericht verteidigt, führt direkt in einen bemerkenswerten politischen Kreis. Es ist der Hamburger Strafrechtler Leon Kruse von der Kanzlei Schwenn Kruse Georg, der das Mandat für den verhafteten Ex-BND-Präsidenten August Hanning übernommen hat.

Das Mandat für das Spionage-Verfahren ist dabei nicht die erste Verbindung: Der Hamburger Strafverteidiger vertrat den Ex-Geheimdienstchef bereits im spektakulären „Block“-Komplexrund um die Entführung der Steakhaus-Kinder, bei dessen Ermittlungen die brisanten Dokumente überhaupt erst ans Licht kamen.

Dass ausgerechnet diese Kanzlei gerufen wird, hat Tradition. Gründer Johann Schwenn verteidigte in den 90er-Jahren den DDR-Spionagechef Markus Wolf, der engste Kontakte nach Moskau und zum KGB pflegte.

Heute führt Kruses Mandantenliste von diesem geheimdienstlichen Umfeld direkt ins Zentrum der Hamburger Finanzpolitik. Kruse vertritt parallel zu Hanning die Hamburger Finanzbeamtin, die im Cum-Ex-Komplex rund um die Warburg-Bank angeklagt ist. Die Staatsanwaltschaft wirft ihr vor, schützend ihre Hand über die Bank gehalten zu haben, um die Rückforderung von 90 Millionen Euro Steuergeldern zu verhindern.
Über diese Cum-Ex-Spuren schließt sich der Kreis zu dem ehemaligen SPD-Abgeordneten Johannes Kahrs, der als politischer Strippenzieher für den Warburg-Bankier Christian Olearius agierte.

Genau hier kreuzen sich die Wege von Ex-BND Hanning und Ex-Politiker Kahrs wieder. Beide fanden in einer umstrittenen Lobby-Organisation zusammen: dem Deutsch-Aserbaidschanischen Forum. Hanning saß dort im Vorstand, Kahrs im Kuratorium. Der Verein bringt über Jahre deutsche Politiker mit dem autoritären Regime in Baku zusammen.

Angesichts der aktuellen Spionage-Vorwürfe gegen Hanning muss vor allem das Deutsch-Aserbaidschanische Forum genauer unter die Lupe genommen werden. Organisationen wie LobbyControl kritisieren diese Institution seit Jahren als intransparente Lobby-Drehscheibe für das autoritäre Regime in Baku.

Dass mit Hanning nun ein langjähriges Vorstandsmitglied unter Spionageverdacht steht, gibt dieser alten Lobby-Achse ein neues, brandgefährliches Gewicht.
