Sharing stories about joy, friendship, romance, ANYTHING is so important. BIPOC and POC experiences are not just stories of the past filled with anguish and struggles - they are real people with real experiences that are happening now and in the present.
There is no excuse to not integrate texts by Black and Brown authors into the current curriculum. Many of these books are classics, but when will there be a time when more modern books and texts will be offered the same accolades?
The same analyzation done with Jane Eyre can be extended to more diverse texts; at the same time, it is necessary to recognize that all texts integrated into the curriculum do not always have to be about minorities pain.
Representation is key! Though it is extremely important to learn about the the discrimination and racism in BIPOC history and experiences, itβs also crucial for young BIPOC to see themselves represented in literature and texts without being just represented as βthe oppressedβ
