#Burundi : Déclaration du @MiniJustice_BDI à l'occasion du lancement des 16 jours d'activisme contre les violences faites aux femmes et aux filles, édition 2025 :
@BurundiGov@NtareHouse
Participants reflect on critical lessons about Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and the use of bio-solutions for sustainable crop protection.
In a session led by Ms. Jane Akot from African Rural University, participants discover how #IPM provides an alternative to chemical-intensive farming by:
- Encouraging biological pest control through beneficial insects and microorganisms.
- Minimizing pesticide use, thereby protecting human health and biodiversity.
- Improving ecosystem balance for healthier crops and higher yields.
"IPM is a farmer’s first line of defense—it’s about working with nature, not against it," Ms. Akot emphasizes.
Why Agroecology?
Participants are engaging in a thought-provoking session led by Mr. Robert Guloba, an experienced agroecologist and farmer.
Mr. Guloba emphasizes that agroecology is far more than farming techniques; it is a holistic approach to building resilient food systems that work in harmony with nature.
Key Highlights from the session:
✅ Restoring ecosystem health by minimizing harmful chemical inputs and promoting biodiversity.
✅ Building climate resilience through practices like crop diversification, soil conservation, and agroforestry.
✅ Reducing input dependency by empowering farmers to rely more on locally available, natural resources.
✅ Integrating traditional knowledge with scientific innovation for sustainable food production.
✅ Promoting food sovereignty and healthier communities through environmentally, socially, and economically sound systems.
“Agroecology goes beyond farming—it’s about integrating nature’s principles into our food production systems,” Mr. Guloba tells participants.
This session is setting the stage for deeper technical discussions later today on tools such as @FAO's Tool for Agroecology Performance Evaluation (TAPE) and the Farm Agroecology Criteria Tool (FACT), designed to help participants assess and apply agroecological principles on their farms.

#Day1 🇺🇬 We are live in Kampala, Uganda, as the Training of Trainers (ToT) on Integrated Pest and Disease Management (IPM) Practices and Agroecology officially kicks off today. The five-day training, running from 14th – 18th July 2025, has brought together a diverse group of participants from across Eastern and Central Africa, including:
👩🌾Women and youth farmers
👨🔬 Scientists and researchers
📈 Extension workers and private sector actors
This regional initiative is designed to build the capacity of key stakeholders in climate-smart agriculture and agroecological practices, equipping them to cascade knowledge and skills to communities, cooperatives, and networks in their home countries.
Why this training?
In a region where pests, diseases, and climate shocks threaten food security, agroecology and IPM offer sustainable, nature-based solutions for resilient farming systems. This ToT empowers participants to adopt and promote practices that:
✅ Enhance food production while protecting the environment
✅ Reduce dependence on chemical inputs
✅ Restore biodiversity and soil health
✅ Strengthen adaptation to climate change
This week promises interactive learning, hands-on field demonstrations, and regional knowledge exchange as participants explore pathways toward sustainable agriculture transformation.
