I am honored to co-chair the Global advisory council of the TWG for the Nigerian National Cancer Control Plan, alongside other esteemed members.
The launch of the Cancer Free Nigeria 2030 campaign on April 2 signals a structured national effort to reduce the burden of cancer and strengthen systems for prevention, early detection, diagnosis, treatment, and care. This aligns with the Union for International Cancer Control (@uicc) Planners Forum.
Warm congratulations to the Chair of the TWG, Prof Dr. Folakemi Odedina (PhD), and Secretary Dr. Uchechukwu Emmanuel Nwokwu, for their leadership.
Addressing gaps requires stronger implementation, better coordination, and accountability across all levels. The Federal Ministry of Health led by the Permanent Secretary and our Minister of State, deserves accolades for this current path.
We have already started a Social Determinants of Health Fund which is needed to address barriers beyond the health system. This aligns with our Care Wheels initiative at the @MedicaidcfP, where we provide free transportation support to cancer patients.
This moment calls for alignment across government, private sector, and partners, with a clear focus on delivery and measurable outcomes. Do join and be a part of history.

FLAC at the #PECCiN Launch
On Tuesday, a bold chapter was written in Nigeria’s health history with the official launch of the Partnership to Eliminate Cervical Cancer in Nigeria (PECCiN).
@FlacNigeria was present in full force, proudly representing a coalition of women leaders dedicated to the health, dignity, and protection of Nigerian women and girls.
As FLAC, our advocacy goes far beyond the stage — we are on the frontlines, championing HPV vaccination for girls, expanding access to cervical cancer screening, and supporting early diagnosis and treatment services in our states.
At this landmark event, FLAC’s commitment was further inspired by the historic gesture of Nigeria’s First Lady, Her Excellency Senator Oluremi Tinubu, who supported this monumental initiative with ₦1 billion donation to accelerate its goals.
This powerful show of leadership is a call to action — for all of us to do more, give more, and reach more women with lifesaving interventions.
FLAC stands united as advocates, mobilizers, and trusted voices for millions of women across the nation. We will continue to work in solidarity with the @NTF_CCE and our health partners to ensure that no woman, no girl, is left behind in this fight.
The future is within reach — a Nigeria where cervical cancer is no longer a threat to our mothers, sisters, and daughters.
-First Ladies Against Cancer (FLAC)
Yesterday marked a major milestone in our collective commitment to eliminate cervical cancer in Nigeria.
As Vice Chair of the @NTF_CCE and Chair of the Organising Committee, I delivered the welcome address at the official launch of the Partnership to Eliminate Cervical Cancer in Nigeria (PECCiN), a landmark initiative uniting national and global stakeholders in our collective mission to eliminate cervical cancer.
Under the leadership of @SenRemiTinubu, First Lady of Nigeria the launch brought together powerful voices and visionary leaders. We heard inspiring statements from @DrTedros, Director-General of the @WHO; @SenRemiTinubu, First Lady of Nigeria; Dr. @Muyi_Aina, CEO of @NphcdaNG; and Dr. @SalakoIziaq, Honourable Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, who has oversight of the task force. The unveiling was graciously done by Her Excellency, the First Lady.
Goodwill messages and strong endorsements were taken from governors, ministers, and partners, all reaffirming their commitment to PECCiN.
The audience was moved by a powerful short documentary on cervical cancer by @DrAishaMustaph1 and Annabelle Ayangbade and inspired by the voices of young school girls who received the HPV vaccine during the launch in November 2023, a reminder of why this work is so urgent and we must all support reimbursement of agencies like @gavi and @UNITAID that deliver life saving interventions to LMICs.
With pECCiN, we are setting the pace for action, accountability, and impact under the renewed hope agenda of President @officialABAT. Collectively, we can and must end cervical cancer.

"TOGETHER, WE MUST INVEST IN A FUTURE WHERE NO WOMAN DIES FROM A DISEASE THAT IS PREVENTABLE…FIRST LADY OLUREMI TINUBU
As she unveils partnership campaign to eliminate cervical cancer
The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu has unveiled a new campaign, Partnership to Eliminate Cervical Cancer in Nigeria, PECCIN, aimed at meeting the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) elimination target by 2030.
The First Lady noted that the campaign would help the nation bring to an end the menace of cervical cancer among women of all ages across the country.
"Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer among women globally. In Nigeria, it is the second most common cancer after breast cancer and it is a silent killer, and one that strikes hardest at the most vulnerable women. Yet, this is a cancer that is preventable”.
"I am glad that this partnership aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda on Health of President Bola Tinubu, to promote the health and well-being of Nigerians, particularly eliminating cervical cancer as a public health threat for women across the nation. Nigeria has shown that it is possible to eliminate cervical cancer by 2030”.
"In the year 2024, Nigeria made a breakthrough by launching the Human Papillomavirus vaccine (HPV) nationally, protecting over 12-million girls in just 9-months. This success was led by the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, with support from global partners, such as Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, the Gates Foundation, WHO, and UNICEF. I thank all our partners for standing with us."
Senator Oluremi Tinubu advised stakeholders and well-meaning Nigerians not to relent but form a strong coalition that would reduce the high prevalence of the disease among women.
"Eliminating cervical cancer requires collaborative action. State and local governments and healthcare professionals, must all prioritize women’s health. Also, our schools and educational institutions need to be champions of immunization. In addition, it behooves on our religious and traditional leaders to advocate for truth and science. And yes, funding and a lot of resources is needed”.
In his remarks, Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr Iziaq Salako, said the partnership is a crucial step towards eliminating cervical cancer in Nigeria, which claims the lives of many women due to ignorance, late presentation for care, and sub-optimal treatment infrastructure.
He said within the last few months, that 40-million Nigerian girls have been vaccinated against the virus which causes the cancer, HPV.
The Minister of State commended the First Lady for her passionate and consistent support for the upliftment of the health and well-being of Nigerians, particularly in the area of cancer prevention and control, a course to which through her pet project, Renewed Hope Initiative, RHI donated N1bn.
