@devonzuegel Hi! Aligned with this, I started a project with the mission to get more info on how our cities use public land! Come check it out: https://t.co/H8DtJiwsPK
Yes yes yes! This is the right way to think about public land management: it adds flexibility now and down the line so we can keep making the best use out of the land that we all use and share.
You get 2 nice characteristics if you skip street parking & instead opt for parking courts:
1. Streets are immediately more slender, without encroaching on drive lanes
2. Land used for parking is consolidated into a bigger chunk, allowing more possibilities for future reuse
African cities need to build if they’re going to accommodate the ~900 million people moving in btw now and 2050. 🌆
But an African YIMBY mvt will have to go beyond just upzoning & reforming land use regulations. It must address underlying factor markets: land, capital, & labor

US streets are incredibly dangerous by developed world standards, and have become much more dangerous since this chart was made. I don't think 50,000 senseless deaths a year is made less bad by the fact that we drive a lot.
This is why I love the work of @plamsonhall & others on using barebones planning/land use for urban expansion in LMICs.
Not only are barebones planning frameworks implementable/tractable.
They also help transition the informal to the formal on the urban periphery.

This ends up being a subsidy from the poorer residents to the wealthier car owners. At least some are getting creative with it—like this U-Haul turned art gallery!
Free on-street parking in Manhattan keeps making no sense to me. This picture illustrates the $$$ the city’s leaving on the table by not charging for it.

Nuria and Patrick at https://t.co/811aooUc7d are the best urban planners I had the fortune to get to know. Everything in their work is firmly based on the economics and trade-offs of the clients. One-stop shop for market-based urbanism and architecture.
All in all, the housing unit is compact and effective. It provides flexibility and comfort at competitive market rate costs!

I’m honored to be partnering with @AlexUgorji_ for this week’s Morazan Monday. At Fitted Projects, we designed the urban plan and the buildings.

The front bedroom allows families to have a multipurpose room. It can be an extra bedroom, a gym or a street-facing business, among many other uses. This is of course because there are no zoning exclusions. And people are making full use of this flexibility!
