Derek Haylocks article Understanding in Mathematics: Making Connections is the next in the #MTmonth24 collection. The article from MT98 March 1982 has been made open for everyone to read during June. https://t.co/c6XyQkcgNQ
This is one of the most fascinating articles I've read about how experts scaffold learning for novices. It's a bit heavy, so I'm listing the 12 main findings.

How many ways can you find to show that 10 tens are equivalent to one hundred? Year 4 used their maths toolkits to explain their understanding of place value excellently this afternoon #readytoprogress#enquiry#ncetm

There’s just great value in exploring the language of maths. It’s a great assessment tool too. The children enjoyed the activity and became intrigued. The lesson that followed was a success. Not surprising with Numicon!
Can we really teach all (and I mean ALL) children to read? Even the ones with severe and complex needs?
I explore this in my blog and reach an uncharacteristically energetic answer!

Numicon is such a versatile and simple resource to help us develop our numeracy skills. Here we were using them to check our doubling. We could also add a 10 block to then use our 10+ facts to work out the value shown. #SaltounP123#MathsWeekScot#numicon
Today P1a read the story ‘10 little dinosaurs’ 🦖🦕 we were so good at counting forwards & backwards that we decided to use the story📖(& our imagination) to pretend that we had ten little dinosaurs to play with, counting them on & off the 10 @Numicon! @MathsScot@MathsStories
