I visited the southernmost tip of India.

I stood at Indira Point. I walked under trees that have stood for centuries. I dove into coral reefs among the most vibrant on earth.

And I sat with the people who live there. Tribal communities, whose land is being taken away by violating the Forest Rights Act. Settlers, many of them former soldiers, placed on these islands by the Indian government, who aren’t getting fair compensation.

The Modi government and BJP tells you Great Nicobar Project is about defence. It is not.

Expand INS Baaz - we will back the government fully. The Navy has been asking for expansion for five years - it has been ignored.

They tell you it is about a transhipment port. It is not. India is already building one in Kerala, which is on the mainland.

What it actually is: 1.5 crore trees felled. Coral reefs erased from official maps. Soldiers and tribals displaced - so one businessman can build hotels and casinos on India’s most irreplaceable ecological land.

Every young Indian I have spoken to understands this. You know that no amount of profit is worth destroying what can never be recovered.

I stand for ecologically balanced development. These islands can be the most extraordinary sustainable destination the world has ever seen. That is the India worth fighting for.

The Tamil Nadu government has directed officials to make it mandatory for all private schools to display, on their notice boards, the tuition fee details as fixed by the government. The School Education Department’s move came in response to several complaints that many private schools were collecting huge amounts beyond the fixed norms. 

All government and private schools will reopen from June 4. A senior official from the department warned that if any private school charges more fees than the nominated amount, its recognition will be cancelled. 

The fee details must be prominently displayed on the notice boards at the main entrance of the school, published on the school’s official website, and printed on the student admission application forms

A Swiss hotel once displayed a list of special rules exclusively for Indian guests which I personally saw and was appalled.

Today, videos of garba in restaurants, loud conversations in airports, and turning aircraft cabins into picnic spots keep doing the rounds. Even in Davos, an Indian businessman blasted Punjabi music in a club so the whole town could hear it, calling it “soft power” but to everyone’s annoyance.

Japan earned global admiration through their courtesy and civic sense. If India wants to be a true global superpower, the world should remember Indians for its excellence, consideration and respect for others.

Our civic sense seriously needs to be upgraded.

Her name was Jayalalithaa.

Her father died when she was two. Her mother, an actress struggling to survive, pulled her out of college at 15 and pushed her onto a film set.

She won the Gold State Award for coming first in Class 10 across all of Tamil Nadu. She spoke six languages.

When MGR died in December 1987 she stood beside his body refusing to leave. Party workers pinched her and pricked her with safety pins to force her away.

When they moved his body to the gun carriage she climbed up to join the procession. MGR’s wife’s nephew Deepan hit her on the forehead and shoved her off in front of television cameras.

They called her a dancer. A kept woman. A foreigner in Tamil politics.

On March 25 1989 she was the Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu assembly. The first woman ever to hold that post in the state. During a chaotic budget session DMK members surrounded her.

In her own words a DMK minister caught hold of my saree and pulled it. This resulted in the safety pin on the shoulder giving way and causing bleeding injuries. The saree was torn.

She walked out in tears.

She vowed she would not return to the assembly floor until she came back as Chief Minister.

Two years later she did. At 43. The youngest Chief Minister in Tamil Nadu’s history.

She served six terms. She built canteens that fed millions for Rs 5 a meal. She launched welfare schemes that became templates for the rest of India.

She died on December 5 2016 while serving her sixth term. She was 68. The circumstances of her final 75 days in Apollo Hospital remain disputed. No independent inquiry has ever been completed.

The woman they pushed off a hearse. The woman whose saree they tore in the assembly. The woman they bled.

She became Amma to an entire state.
