The Bears were truly in a class of their own. Ben Johnson consistently put his receivers in position to get open.

This is no doubt also tied to a QB’s willingness to attempt tight-window throws and trust his receivers on jump balls. That can bring separation down without necessarily hurting production.

Some offenses are also built around short throws, where receivers are already expected to be more open. So they need to create even more separation than expected for it to be a positive.

The idea for this chart came from a comment @robertmays made on The Athletic Football Show while discussing the Bears’ supporting cast.

I expected the Bears to rank highly since several players were near the top in adjusted average separation, but even I did not expect the gap to be this extreme.
